Disabled people into employment.

Since amongst government and society at general, having 2 million people on some sort of disability support benefits is seen as a bad thing.

How do we ensure disabled people get off state support and into meaningful jobs?

Clearly a pet subject of StudentPhil. I think he's quoting me out of context somewhat from another post about the raising of school leaving age to 18 unless the child has disabled parents whereupon they are exempted.

If this is a serious thread then it should be pointed out that disabled people, in general are indeed quite the opposite. More than capable AND willing to get on in life, despite the unfairness of nature.

Remploy. huge employer of disabled. Charitable sector. Huge employer of diabled. Shops and Stores (with a big push from the DDA/Disability laws) also a generally big employer - albeit somewhat cnyical and numebr counting at times. For some, their disability is too great to consider working, or even working from home. Again, another big growth area for disabled folk with the drop in wholesale broadband prices.

It is for those too poorly to work or those with disablements that prevents them from becoming all that they can be that benefits really are beneficial.

The problem is when this is abused. People claiming for back ache and stress to avoid work or curtailment of benefits under the JSA regime whereby you have to seek work. This in turn has inflated the number of people on disability benefit, a % of whom are not 'disabled'.

To answer the question there is nothing else the government need do. The benefits are sufficient (although could do with being higher but is prevented from being higher due to so many claimants. The government needs to redefine what it considers "able to work" to force people back onto JSA who are not disabled. Unfortunately, job centres are stuffed full of left-wing socialists who sympathise with the cause thus signing off every form presented to them without due dilligence.

It is the sort that questions this assumption that if you have a disability then there if nothing wrong with you and you are getting benefits for nawt.

There are many barriers for disabled people getting jobs.

1 transport- fairly often there is no decent access to buses and trains for disabled people, and that is vital if they are to access jobs.

2 Many employers are frightened of disability and the costs in sick leave or extra equipment that might be required

3 A good number of people on disability benefits have pain issues that limit their ability to work.

Originally yes, but it's just remploy now. Just like KFC used to be for Kentucky Fried Chicken but they don't call it that anymore as it sounds too greasy!.

Disabled people can work for disability charities, maybe they can, but it is not much choice.
