Why does Lidl get such a slating?

  • I love Lidls. We visit our friend in France every year and thought the stuff we were buying in the French Lidl's near to him was brilliant... went to our nearest back in England and it was basically the same stuff! They are opening a new one in our town so can't wait and will second the kids clothes and their own "Croc" type shoes & trainers. Has anyone else noticed that the store layouts seem to be almost the same stuff in the same places or is it just the ones around here?! I wish our local Mr T's did that they are always moving stuff around which makes you take much longer to find the things you need ... hmmm shopping giant ploy me thinks :-)

Their goats cheese and caramelised onion tarts are lovely. Not always in the store, it was probably during a 'french theme' week that i got them but they were delicious. Wish I'd bought more and frozen them.

We have just had a Lidl open near us and its great!

The store does take a bit of getting used to and initially it took me ages to do my shopping because I wasnt used to the different products but now its easier and I save loads. My only problem is that they dont do alot of low fat foods.

Their wafer ham is brilliant, no added water like other supermarkets and even my fussy Felix loving cats enjoy their cat food!

There was a thread on here on what to buy and what not to buy at lidl and aldi but i cant for the life of me find it!

Has anyone any recommendations for their washing powder/dishwasher tablets?

The biological washing gel (Formil I think?) is fine, had no problems with it :)

    Don't own a dishwasher :(

  • I forgot that I'd started this thread. It seems that it varies from store to store. We have 2, one in the southern part of the city and one in the northern end of the city. One is only a few minutes walk from my house so is great for top ups and I now get all my fruit and veg from there as it's cheaper and far better quality than the other supermarkets manage (with the exception of Morrisons). The meat is also much better than all the others (except Morrisons). I get toilet roll, nappies (thanks to a recommendation on this thread) - £5.19 for 50 as opposed to nearly a tenner for that amount of huggies. They're certainly no worse than Huggies and much better than Pampers. We also get a lot of snack type stuff from there, sauces, milk now that Tesco & Sainsburys have stopped their 3 for £3. And I can't resist their plants, they're all really good, very cheap and my front garden is looking a lot brighter now.

It's trial and error as it is with all supermarkets own brand stuff I just wish they'd have baskets, I have to put everything under the pushchair as I go round, looks like I'm going to mick the stuff :D

  • Their sun dried tomatoes are like a quarter of the price of sainsburys, same with their black olives - 69p a jar, these things are so expensive everywhere else - add in their pasta and goats cheese and you've got the makings of a lovely greek salad!
