    Snobbery and ignorance, mostly.

Still, it keeps down the queues for the rest of us.

Tell me about it, they have bought a local site to us and we are really looking forward to it opening. But we live in a "snobby" area, so it's met with opposition.

I'm really hoping they open up and show the locals what it is all about, we have no discount stores or choice local to us.

So true ! AND most of their wines (which are usually very good - esp their Champagne) don't have their name on it - unlike the " common" supermarkets - so you can pass it off as something a bit more superior :rotfl:

I occasionally buy a few things in Lidl, generally fruit and veg, but it's not very often. I don't like the small range, I get my meats etc cheaper in Asda as I buy them whoopsied, and also Asda's normal range can be cheaper than Lidl. Oh, and they don't have baskets as they keep getting stolen for scrap... well use plastics ones!
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • I like Lidl. Have only recently started shopping in there.
I mainly go for the half price weekend deals and stock up.
All have been very good quality for the price

Haven't really been to Lidl as never had one close enough before we moved (and haven't had time to pop there since we did 2 weeks ago) but the packing 'system' in Aldi does grate a little - when I fill my trolley I make sure eggs & bread etc don't get squashed or broken but that doesn't apply when the cashier launches things back into the trolley. I'm also 37 weeks pregnant and it nearly killed me to then lean over the trolley to pack things into my bags before I took them out to the car. I'll nip in for 'top-ups' from now on but I just can't physically do a full shop there anymore :( They wouldn't need to be so manic if they actually had staff manning all the tills instead of installing 4/5 but only ever using 1 & so creating massive queues back up the shop (yes, I know it keeps staff costs down but it still less than enjoyable)

I've never been a fan of Aldi or Netto but I absolutely love Lidl! The stuff's not only cheap but it's quality too. If you have a problem with anything they can be quite generous. I've emailed them a few times & they've rang me up to discuss the problem within a few days. I love the fact that it's never crowded & the air con's great in the summer. Although I don't buy all my shopping from there it's definitely my favourite. I've never heard of the staff being treated badly, just that the pay is good.

Like Lidl, but overall prefer Aldi. Alot of people throw up the old "its not as cheap as value range" stuff, but they ae so wrong. You have to compare like with like the products in aldi and lidl are on the whole at least as good as mid ranges in the big 4 or even thepremium ranges. they also get stuff the supermarkets would never get-alot of lovely cakey/deli things from euro amongst others plus the value products are shooting up in price. Mr t's value tinned toms are horrible, Aldis are as good as napolina-thick and tasty mmmm.
Best of all is its so much quicker, and with 4 kids less stuff for them to ask for on the way around lol.

BTW have worked in asda and staff were treated like dogs literally-horrible place to work. My friend at tesco says its not much better lol.

In my opinion most of their brands are better quality than the other supermarket value ranges. Especially all of the things that Germans enjoy and do well, like cheeses, cold meats and chocolate. I just wish they had a better bread selection.

well one of the things we really like and go through too much of is the part baked ciabatta. we used to get them in lidl. then lidl stopped doing them. so we started getting asdas and they were awful, then tesco - just as bad. so now we found that they sell them in aldi we pick up loads when we go. we usually go shopping saturday mornings and go lidl one week and aldi the next and so on

there are things we need from proper supermarkets but i get them every so often, anchovies for one are a bit unreliable, pudding rice, wood based cat litter, certain fruit and veg, lentils and bulgur wheat stuff

but also if someone had told me a few years back that i would be a lidl or aldi shopper i would have slapped them. i am a bit snobby about somethings and had spent many years shopping in waitrose and m+s for my basic shopping. i cant believe what i was missing out on and how much money i wasted. people dont go there because of the snob value and it can stay that way as far as im concerned, i love the fact that theres hardly anyone in there
  • Hi

I sometimes go into Lidl and I've always been happy with what I've bought but to honest I find I can't do a full shop there and I don't have time to visit two supermarkets. I buy alot of fruit and veg and often they don't have all that I need.

having heard what others have said about their customer service i may write to them as the veg section is quite lacking, i would like there to be turnips, celeriac, more herbs, also they dont sell jars of capers which you would think would be near the olives and stuff. we find we have to get limes in aldi as for some reason lidl dont sell them
