Why does Lidl get such a slating?

  • i prefer Aldi to Lidl. I dont like how the till ladies/men scan the food so fast and literally chuck it in your trolley !!!
life is what you make it, make it fun !
  • I have had reason to contact their customer services recently about something I found in one of their products. I was very impressed by their willingness and desire to follow this up and quite happy with the apoloy received. I know their in-store customer service is nil, but over the couple of occasions I haven't been happy about a product and taken it back it was refunded without question.

The fruit and veg. is excellent in my local store and I nearly fainted in Tesco's when I saw their prices the other day. I can see that it wouldn't be an ideal store for a pregnant lady or elderly person but why not turn round to the customers and ask for help - I am quite sure they would be willing, and I am sure you will be saving at least 30% on your shopping, so the convenience of the packer (in my experience something of a liability) is more than made up for.

  • I've heard their store managers are treated v badly by area managers, not somewhere Id want to work and the cashiers are dead miserable.

But I do go about once a month, I like their lentil soup, cured meats, vaccum packed tortellini and the Linessa low fat sausages.

Lidl Area mangers upwards are complete a"r"holes but my local staff although very hard worked are brilliant !

I shop in Aldi now and then when they have SO,s that take my fancy but on the whole Lidl are cheaper with better quality, in particular the fruit and veg.

WHATEVER YOU DO! Do not buy peaches, nectarines or apricots after the end of August as no matter which Supermarket you use 5 out of 10 will be rotten from the kernel outwards !
  • I don't know why people slate Lidl. I couldn't do my weekly shop there, but I find its very very good for part baked bread, pittas, crunchy oat cereal, ice cream (99p a tub and it tastes just as good as Ben & Jerrys). I also buy cheese, ham, corned beef, milk, fruit and veg there. The wine is nice as well. Oh.. their mayonnaise is even better than Hellmans in my opinion and a fraction of the price. Once i'd bought their Mayo, I have never gone back to Hellmans. I also love their cream cheese, creme freshe and tinned goods. We tend to nip in there once a month. Tinned mackerel fillets etc are also very cheap in there and really tasty. I tend to make a dip with a small tin of mackeral mashed up with cream cheese. To die for!

Gosh, if I was going by that one of staff being treated badly so I don't shop there, I wouldn't have where to shop! :D
It is unbelievable how many stories I get to hear about bad treatments in Co-op, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, etc...can't say I ever heard of a shop that treats it's staff good and fair across the country.
That said, my local LIDL is great, with staff that have been there for years and are always polite and friendly. Although even if they weren't, I would still shop there as I am there to do my shopping, nothing less, nothing more.
  • You're all right about other places treating staff poorly. My SIL works for Morrisons as did a friend of DH, both say they get treated terribly, the friend only stuck it for a few months, and if I was SIL from what she has told us I'd have been out a long time ago. I worked at Tesco a while back and had a disciplinary for being off sick. I had serious sinusitis, was coughing up big hard grey lumps every 20 minutes, was on ABs for 2 weeks to clear it up. They gave me averbal warning as they didn't believe that sinusitis ever needed ABs and it was just a bit of an irritant. One occasion a girl slipped on a puddle in the staff canteen where the roof had been leakingfor some time but no-one had put a wet floor sign up, she had an ambulance called, was off work for a few months because of the damage she had done to her back. When she returned to work she had a disciplinary for being off sick . There are lots more stories about that place, some I know to be true others that sound a bit far fetched but knowing what I do could be quite believable. I didn't stay very long as I couldn't stand the way you were treated there.

They don't do 'value' ranges, it's true, but the ranges that they do do ime are not much dearer than the value ranges ofthe big supermarkets, certainly cheaper than their normal ranges and often better quality. There are things I've had from there that I would never buy again, but that's the same for the big supermarkets.

The best toilet roll though I have to say is Farmfoods. £2 for 9, it's really thick, really soft and lasts about as long as a normal 12 pack would last.

  • Nobody mention the fact they make people pay for plastic bags

There was a whole tread of ASDA shoppers moaning about even the mention of such underhand retailing :rotfl:

I get the bulk of my fruit n veg, dairy, chocolate, nuts and household goods from Lidl. Some of the flavours of the World specials they do especially the liqueurs are fantastic.

For the basics n staples they're crackin and the quality is generally high too. OK there's things they don't have but I have no issue in buying what I want from whatever source is best.

For me value for money = the best quality product I can at the best price. What I save in Lidl (I worked out 50p per £1 on my local tesco) allows me to buy the highest quality meat from the organic butchers M Moen & Sons. Even Moens' is cheaper than Tesco on price by a fair way if I bought like for like quality in both. TBF I'm a happy bunny :T
  • Staff at my local store are all friendly and chatty and have gotten to know them as well. I would liken it to a very large corner shop.

I but a lot of my basics and staples from there and have found them to be cheaper and of better value than supermarket own labels.

Mine recently had a XXXL promotion and I stocked up on them.
1L of shower get for £1.29 !!! and its thick and lathers well.
    4 cheese and tom pizza @ £2.49
