Usually the buyer starting a thread complains about being charged more than the postage amount shown on the label/stamps, which automatically annoys sellers as they usually have to pay for the packaging.

I'm a seller and it annoys me when a buyer is being charged excessive postage, as that disatisfaction with ebay affects all our sales.

If a buyer feels aggrieved enough to mention it on here, then they might feel aggrieved enough not to bother with ebay anymore- and that hits my profits.

So yes, sellers charging over the top for their p and p annoys me.

They aren't aggrieved, just lonely. "Let's start a heated debate" as per Mrs. Merton.
"as that disatisfaction with ebay affects all our sales" - a bit sweeping, how would you know?
I've bought many an item with inflated postage - based on overall price. All the stuff about people not knowing how much something costs to post baffles me. If I see an auction, I factor in the postage before I bid, as I know how much I'm prepared to pay overall. I bid more if the postage is less. I only got really annoyed when I received a phone, bargain by the way, wrapped in 4 sheets of newspaper. My annoyance was based on the fact it could have been easily damaged leaving me unable to sell it on. £7.75 charged, £2.38 paid by the seller.
Are ebayers little kids who need to be led by the hand? From some posts, it appears so.

I appreciate the seller overcharged you. However, if the seller paid £2.38 that would mean an amount between £2 and £2.10 was shown on the postage label, unless you didn't pay by PayPal. PayPal would take 27p of a £7.75 postage charge and I assume the seller at least stuck the package together with sellotape and put a label with your address on it, both costing a couple of pence. A couple of pence may not seem like much but over a number of items it adds up.

It seems you may be one of the kids who needs leading by the hand!

£7.75 less £2.38 (which I agree is not a postage charge so probably a mistype) leaves £5.37 which for a bit of sellotapte and a bag or box is completely excessive in my opinion. I would suggest that seller needs to look again at where they buy their stationery.

  • The main problem with P&P from a buyers point is basically they want the item cheaper. Don't we all but if you have 2 items, 7.99 plus 1.99P&P and 4.99 plus 4.99 P&P it would appear people want to pay the 4.99 cost but only the 1.99 P&P without accounting for the fact the item is worth a tenner.

Collectively my customers pay £1600 a year for 'free' P&P because it's easier than dealing with those unhappy over £1.78, some of which was spend on packaging...

You are using psychology as a business tool and I think that is a good idea. We are being told how difficult things are in this recession, so anything that gives one business an edge over another has to be a good thing.

Most people think stars are a poor move for sellers, yet as I have considerably better stars than many of my competitors I can outsell them a dozen times- and I get more money for my products. In reality there would probably be very little difference between buying a widget from me for a total of £10 or form my competitors at £9.50- but buyers are blinded by good stats and stars. That works for me so I use it to my advantage.

At Christmas I had a line of trinkets , nothing special just high street stuff that I bought in a job lot at auction. I bought some really cheap gift bags from Hong Kong, about 3p each and advertised my trinkets as coming with a free beautiful gift bag (they photographed very well !) . That 3p per bag was very well spent as I sold out by mid October and my feedback had lots of mention about the lovely 'free' gift bag.

    Pyschology for 3p a go.

Not all supermarkets give out free bags. Although none charge £2+ AFAIK. I've used inside out bag for lifes to post clothes in as they are actually stronger than some of what sold as postage bags.
I was charged 4 quid for a 1.75 postal costed item which came wrapped in a cheap and very flimsy black bin bag:mad::mad:
