Another excessive postage amount

  • I'm shocked somebody would query an additional £1.70 odd for the cost of packaging, particularly if it was wrapped properly. Bubble wrap and brown paper aren't actually that cheap any more!
I had a buyer ask why I charged £2.00 for P&P when she had bought something else and was only charged 99p. The actual postage cost of my item was about £2 so I actually lost money due to the cost of packaging.

Unreasonable buyers expecting too much. I ALWAYS check the cost of P&P when buying items, if I think it's too high I don't bid.
Wonder if the OP would be rushing to refund the seller if they had drastically undercharged on the P&P costs?
  • The seller wanted £3.50 to deliver the goods to you, you accepted. How the seller gets them to you and what it costs them is non of your business.

Since i can still buy my items at less than the weight suggests it costs them to send- then either postage from the Far East costs barely anything and the stuff is free, or they truly have free postage (and if so then I want free postage as well please...).

The odd thing is they are always offering me wholesale deals at cheap prices- but if i buy wholesale I have to pay postage and it works out to be dearer than buying single items retail.

Maybe it does take a genius to work it out. Because I can.
Selling for less than the postahe costs? A car wash that charges less than their operating cost?
Substitute criminal money laundering for a way to balance a massive surplus of export and you have some of the picture.

It was warapped in bubblewrap & brownpaper.

Bubble wrap sells at Staples for £24.99 per small roll: http://www.staples.co.uk/mailing-packaging-supplies/bubble-wrap/large-bubble-roll-750mm-x-50m?r=se

and brown paper for £1.89 for a small roll: http://www.staples.co.uk/mailing-packaging-supplies/wrapping-paper/kraft-paper-rolls/kraft-brown-paper-roll-750mm-x-4m?r=se
  • I have just started to sell on ebay and sold three items at the weekend all with £2.50 postage each. The first two items were bought by the same buyer and they paid me £5.00 in postage. When they were weighed at the post office (wrapped in brown paper and parcel tape) the postage came to just over £2.00 so I refunded £2.50 and I did receive a thank you. The third parcel cost £1.72 to post in a new jiffy bag and I am unsure as to whether I should refund any of this postal charge to this buyer?

In the past I have been overcharged by sellers quite a bit and undercharged by one. I felt guilty about the undercharge but had the postage been more I would not have bid on the item. The daftest seller was at Christmas I bid on a set of books and left the minimum bid with free postage - I won the item for £11.99 and I emailed to say please dont send them first class as I dont need them for Christmas - he ignored my message and sent them first class I got them Christmas eve and it cost him nearly £10.00 to post!!!

I've yet to meet anyone who can tell the exact postage of any item just by the picture in a listing.
You don't need to. You just have to look at the seller's P&P charge and decide whether you are happy to pay that or not. You can go and see what others are charging which will aid your decision.

So please continue to try and rip your customers off its all good for me.
Now you've overstepped the mark here. I did not rip anyone off. If you read my post you'd see all my costs, but like those that complain about "high P&P", you've ignored these hidden costs - you just want cheap postage and something for nothing.

Does anything on this board get such heated responses as p&p charges?
Stars & FB is for each individual buyer to decide what is fair that often can't be judged until the item arrives & the stamp price & level of packaging is taken into consideration.
At that point the buyer leaves their personal assessment of whether it was a fair price in their opinion.
  • I am in the same predicament at the moment, having bought an item and paid almost £3.50 over the actual postal charges. I am happy with the item but I feel the postage is excessive considering all the packaging used was recycled (a Debenhams carrier bag). I am a private seller on ebay and I too only charge for actual p & p, not ebay, paypal fees etc and not petrol to the post office.

  • And this is exactly what stars are for. You don't know the ACTUAL p&p necessarily until you receive the item, but you are happy to bid and buy. So you can't really neg or neutral, so you lower the stars to reflect your dissatisfaction if that's how you feel.

Personally I bid, I pay and don't moan unless it's SNAD or INR.

Usually the buyer starting a thread complains about being charged more than the postage amount shown on the label/stamps, which automatically annoys sellers as they usually have to pay for the packaging.
