When I purchased said item I would have been happy with the p&p charge of £3.50 if it was anywhere near this price on the packaging. I did not know at the time that it would only cost £1.72 as I had no idea of the weight etc. I have therefore based my feedback on a positive as I was pleased with the item and reflected a low score on her p&p charges.

Nobody has ever answered this on these monotonous threads, but the biggest fee avoiders are massive powersellers, mainly from China, some in the US.
These sellers aren't dim, nor will any of them worry about competition from this tiny tiny forum. Their stars are fine, and the business is rolling in.
Just because a few people post about excessive charges, £1.50 on this thread for god's sake, and the same people drone on about poor sellers and dishonesty etc. etc,, doesn't mean the whole world feels that way.
The facts are, loads of sellers do it and survive quite happily.
I don't do it as the postage part of my sales is trivial. However, I regularly avoid paypal fees by using bulk payments.

How do you avoid paypal fees using bulk payments, out of interest?

Not sure it'll work for me anyway, as I am a ridiculously small scale seller, who is never going to make a profit I don't think..

    too many comps..not enough time!

I agree with that in part. I sold a large used photo album on eBay and the weight exceeded the maximum for 2nd class post so the cheapest service I could offer was Standard Parcels+a large jiffy. I didn't think it would sell because the postage was so high but it did.

However, I've just bought a data sim for a mobile dongle off Amazon marketplace for £7 + £3.50 P&P. Now I know that won't cost £3.50 but I'm not going to post feedback saying 'high P&P charge' because the alternative would have been £9 + £2 P&P from a different seller.
  • I recently bought an item with a postage of £5, when it arrived it was actually £2.40 and wrapped in an inside out supermarket carrier bag, so the seller couldn't argue the fact that they had packaging costs.

When I left feedback, which was positive, the item was great, I left appropriate stars and noticed their p&p was at 4.1, which I've never seen before. Their other stars were all less than 4.5.

You're still making the £1.72 to £3.50 comparison! Unless the item was wrapped in old newspaper stuck together with used chewing gum then the cost of the packaging is just as important as what the price of the postage label on it says.

Not all supermarkets give out free bags. Although none charge £2+ AFAIK. I've used inside out bag for lifes to post clothes in as they are actually stronger than some of what sold as postage bags.

    Surely the p&p is £3.50?
