  • Yep, if it looks clear, use it - what is to go off? If it is cloudy - that would suggest it might be contaminated, so I would bin that one.

Best before dates mean nothing when it comes to food safety - they are about taste only. I doubt anyone would notice the difference between syrup that is beyond its best before and new syrup.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • yes it will be fine, sometimes the tin makes black marks in the syrup as others say if its clear it will be ok

Yes, use it. Sugar is a preservative, remember!

  • Yeah I would use it too. My old flatmate and I used a jar of gravy granules that wae two years out of date and we're still here to tell the tale!

have to add my vote - use it! if its cloudy try heating it up to boiling point (you may have to add a little water if it goes too thick). this would sterilise it. honey (which is mostly sugar can also go a little cloudy and heating it clears it again - so my take is that would work with golden syrup).
  • I would use it - sell by dates are just a guide if it looks ok and smells ok there is no problem
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • I'm in the "use it" camp too - it is mostly sugar, surely, and that is a preservative in itself.
