Agrah I made up HUGE batch of cottage pie last night (meat mix only) and left it out all night - in the pan with the lid on.
Will it be OK? Am guessing I'll have to throw it away but it's about 12 portions sob sob sob.

Unless your kitchen was unusually hot last night it will be fine.
Most people didn't have fridges 50 years ago. Leftover meat would have been unrefrigerated for several days although it would have been left in a cold pantry.
I think our obsession with food safety is the enemy of food economics. I wonder how much food has been thrown away needlessly?0 -

Well done for not chucking it
People worry too much about food safety these days. As has been mentioned, we've not long had the joy of fridges/freezers and the population as a whole seems to be doing ok...
I'd trust my eyes/nose far more than a sell by/use by date.
And anyway - when you defrost/reheat it, you'll kill off any bugs that *might* be in it.
mmmmm...shepherd's pie...mmmmm0 -
I'm forever leaving things to cool down and forgetting about them until the next morning... As long as the cats haven't got at it, I just freeze it / eat it anyway...A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...My Fathers Daughter wrote: »Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.
