Were there perhaps procedural failings during the suspension process where the suspending manager failed to involve a union rep? (the policy seems to suggest this should happen).

Was the suspending manager subsequently involved in the investigation or disciplinary process?

There may be grounds to go to appeal especially since at this point he has nothing to lose and possible reinstatement to gain.

well the dismissal will come from the sector manager(s)
office managers dont make that call, though they can be the ones to deliver the decision
it really needs a well briefed union rep to look over it
I suggest the OP gets her OH to get a senior union rep to look over it
I seem to recall he is in a mail centre which are generally strong with union presence

He did speak to the Union who advised that there was nothing they could do for him.

Had he asked for help before the incident for his addiction the outcome might have been different but because he didnt there was nothing that the Union could do.

The only thing I have asked him to do is to ring the Union to see whether he could get some sort of letter, not a reference, but just a letter saying Mr xxxxx worked for RM from xxx to xxx.

Then at least he will have a checkable work history. I dont know whether they can but it is worth checking.

I rang the tax credits and they say that because he isnt working we now lose the child tax credits part - gets better.

Still I am sure there are people out there is far worse situations than ours so count your blessings I s'pose.

Thanks for all the support on here - it has been invaluable to me.

Hopefully I can return the favour one day.

I don't think you owe any favours here - he owes them in barrels! The best way of repaying them is not to put you through this again. And you can pass on that message. He's fortunate have had somebody stand by him - and not just over this but all that went before. He wants to remember that everyone has a final straw and make sure that this is a new leaf. It won't be as easy to stand by him if this happens again.

you should contact RM HR and request a reference letter
you may find they will supply a simple worked from/to letter

as you say, seeking adiction support after the fact didnt help
its ironic in RM that people with addictions can be protected to a point but folks with physical illnesses can often be managed out of the business(RM term)

You work 24 hours a week so you shouldn't be losing all your tax credit surely - if you need to be working 30 hours to qualify again would your work find you overtime or extra duties even for a limited time ?

While I certainly think he should have been sacked, no harm in having words with someone in the union higher up the food chain. Stoners aren't uncommon in RM and the union certainly used to be very strong. I certainly remember them getting a guy his "job" back plus £20k+ compensation after he was sacked when, through his overeating he made it impossible for him to either fit in the postvan or do the job!

Perhaps he will be reemployed now?

Any update on what's happened to that guy and his wife/girlfriend? I'm guessing he's still unemployed and she's left him.

    .

What an awful thing to say, you are so judgemental towards people who have criminal records or who have been sacked etc.
Why would she have left him? people are more than their jobs you know, and he was going to get help for his problems.
Plenty of people with criminal records and who have been sacked do go on to have good lives with well paid jobs and nice partners.
Life isnt always so cut and dried and you never know what will happen to you.
