Have you actually tried any on?

Yes, I've tried on every dress that I've posted on here! Except the one from the blog, obviously.
I love it, but who knows whether (a) it would suit me or (b) the dressmaker would get it right!
I am trying to calculate the duty etc that I would have to pay, it is very tricky!7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs14 Feb: 10st4.5lbs

True. Do you have a little time to keeo looking for the justin a dress second hand? What about the one in the shop - could you persuade them to sell you the sample? Presumming it fits! I think personally I would be wary of ordering from the States, just due to the shipping time etc. What if they send the wrong one??

The US shop says 16-18 weeks for delivery, the shop here says 6 months!!!:eek:
The sample does fit but is quite dirty and 'pulled at', I wouldn't want it tbh
I don't really have time to keep looking for it 2nd hand for much longer, but I do have my Monsoon dress as backup (thank goodness).7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs14 Feb: 10st4.5lbs

Ah - I see your dilemma. If I were you I would still contact a dress maker. Show them the pictures, ask what they think. You could choose the material and the lace. The dress maker would tailor it to your fit exactly and could make alterations so it suited you. I would spend a week lookoing for a suitable person and if I hadn't found anyone by next Friday I would go into the shop and ask them to find out actual delivery times. I seem to recall you do have more than 6 months? If you weren't satisfied with their answer then try America - but if I were you I would be careful who I choose as surely they all come from the same place - ie China?? Therefore delivery should be similar.
But then, I am not you....

I think that the dress shops here just try to scare us into ordering too early tbh - all my friends who are married were told 6 months as well and their dresses all came in within 4 months or so!!! At least the US shop is just being honest. But I am afraid to take the risk lol.
OK, will contact a few dressmakersI did speak to one a month or so ago, but she is also a dress designer and she quoted me £2,000 for making that dress. But maybe that's because she's well known etc etc. I don't know where to start looking for another one!!

£2000! Holy cow. Do you not know anyone who is good with a sewing machine!? Do you have any arts colleges near by? They might be someone who is keen to expand their portfolio? Or like I said pop into a material shop, they may well know (Or even make things themselves) someone. Plus you will get a chance to nosey at the material!

There are a few really good fabric shops nearby that I would check out to get the fabric. It's lace and some type of silk by the look of it, so wouldn't be cheap! And there's the labour costs too. But it doesn't look TOO difficult to make - the skirt in particular wouldn't be that hard, surely (says she who knows nada about sewing).7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs

I have no idea either! When I married the first time my mum and friend made my dress. The material for my dress, lace and satin, a train with lace around the edge, and my sisters bridesmaid dress came to about £100! That was 14 years ago though.

Lace and silk cost a fortune these days, and they are my fave fabrics
No idea how much the dressmaker would charge for labour!

True - but surely not as expensive as £2000! Although I don't know.
