Presents the night before

  • We always have the presents and cake after dinner because everyone is busy and both myself and husband usually leave for work before kids get up for school. It's never been an issue we just wait until everyone is home then we sing Happy Birthday blow out the candles and give them all their presents and cards which came through the post. I know some people will think we are mean making them wait all day but it should be a family celebration.

I think that if I was 9 years old I would not be at all impressed with the idea of waiting until 6pm for my main present, and then being stuck in a restaurant not being able to play with it.

I think you should do the reverse of your suggestion - give him the main present in the morning, and leave the smaller presents until later on.

I don't think what Pigpen suggested is mean. My parents done it to me EVERY Christmas. There was always something I really wanted, and they'd wait til the afternoon and then go get it, and it was the most exciting thing ever! I'd never assume either that oh I'll get it in the afternoon. Every Christmas morning they'd say "right that's it all presents done, lets tidy up" and I'd accept it, happily because of everything else I'd got.

That second present in the afternoon, would honestly make me burst with excitement. I loved it :o

It's not a pop at you Kimberly, but a question in general, if it's appropriate (i.e not a school day) do people not book the day off as a holiday? We have a no-work rule for all our birthdays here (although The Boy is only 2)
Mine are school aged and neither of us work weekends, so not entirely the same but no I wouldn't book AL for mine or DH's birthday. That's because our annual entitlement has to stretch to cover as much school hols as possible, teacher training days, days for sports day, xmas concerts etc with a couple of days held in reserve for teacher strike, schools closed for snow, extra days closed due to building work, not open cos the heating has broken down (all those I've just listed happened this past year). We would have been more likely to book time off when DS for any birthdays because his nursery was open 51 weeks a year.

I'd add Tiny Wings, Cut The Rope, Fling, Tiny Tower, Fruit Ninja.

I'm glad my DD didn't see this thread - she doesn't know there is such a thing as a "main present" when it comes to birthdays!;)
