I would feel mean making him wait all day plus we will be go straight to the restaurant to meet everyone.

He is old enough to understand that his dad wants to be with him when he opens his present.

When my other half was working 100 hours a week there were a few birthdays that we had to do this, we even had Christmas Day early one year.

Although if you are all going out in the evening, that would be even better, he can open his main present in front of everyone :)

I'd give it to him the night before then he can spend his birthday morning fiddling with it while he's at your workplace. If you leave it until the evening of his birthday he won't enjoy being at the restaurant so much as he'll be dying to get home and play with his new toy :)

    It's called deferred gratification!:D

When my brood were young if OH was working an early shift on Christmas Day, they could open their stockings, but the main present opening was saved for when Daddy could join in.
These days (they are teens/early twenties) I have to get them up just before their Dad gets in, lol!

But conversely, his dad is old enough to understNd that his nine year old son will want to enjoy hid birthday present during the day of his birthday, not just for three or so hours before bed. He is only nin. I would have no problem making my soon to be 12.year old wait, but feel a 9year old who goes to bed around 9pm, is a bit young to not get to enjoy his birthday gift for the whole day of his birthday. I am sure he wont be any less pleased with it by the time dad gets home. It also means he can enjoy it while he's sitting in the salon, which lets face it, is a pretty boring way to spend your birthday at that age. No offence meant op, needs must, but let him have his pressie. Has dad got a videophone, can you not videocall while he is opening his gift? Myoh has missed a few of the boys' birthday through work, and we did this when we could.

    Great point!

I change my mind give it to him the night before ;) Save the smaller pressies for later so he gets to see him opening something!

My ex works an early shift, so we always did presents the night before a birthday so he could see them being opened.

I liked that better on school days so they could go in the next morning and tell their friends about their presents rather than saying they had to wait until later.
Here I go again on my own....

I would let him have the small presents in the morning.. and leave him thinking that was everything he was getting.. and not mention another present... and give him that when OH got in later.

Mine ALWAYS have their birthday presents later on when family come round.
