However not so good on fruit and veg - Hutchinsons on Stanhope St beats them hands down. Often get mangoes for 4 or 5 for a quid - all there fruit is excellent quality and dirt cheap.
Thanks for that, i wasn't aware of any around here.
I was a student in Manchester and did 90% of my shopping in either Rusholme or Chinatown. I used to go to a greengrocer in Chorlton on a Saturday afternoon and get enough fruit, veg, herbs for everybody in the student house for a fiver.
Now when i go to Manchester i stock up on non perishables in worldwide stores.
Also get lots of fabric from Longsight market0 -
nope - you're all wrong.
I'm Indian and i own my own fruit & veg delivery business here in Cambridge.
Until last summer i thougt that that Alphonso's were the best. Then my Gran told me about the area from India where she is from - Gujarat. There is a little known region there called Junagadh (literal translation: 'Old House') where she said as she was growing up all the local townsfolk used to pick the 'Kesar' variety of mango. She siad there is no other mango in the world that can beat the Kesars.
So i went to the wholesale markets in London and started stocking them and they used to fly out like hot cakes as the season is very short. I also noted that Innocent smoothies also use kesar mangoes in their smoothies - the ones from Junagadh!!0 -

Hi
Does anyone know where I can buy Shaheen's Pilao masala online?
http://www.shaheen.co.uk/pilau_masala.htm
There are a few stockists in Greater London and many in Greater Mancester but as i live in Kent, would prefer to save time driving and just order online. I did try calling the manufacturers but no answer
Thanks!0 -
There's a great shop in Shelton, Stoke on Trent called PAK FOODS, really fresh fruit and veg and cheaper then the supermarkets too0

Neilboy- How do you rate the Asian shops in Cambridge,I've tried some of them in Mill Rd but would appreciate your local input as to the best/best value,i've also heard good reports on the shop at the top of Histon Rd.
Thanks0 -
Don't forget to add Tooting high street to the mix & as well as Southall high street & yes got to agree kesar karees are the best. For someone who can't be bothered to chop & pulp down, you can buy the kesar/alphonso mango's already in liquid form canned. We have these 'watered' down with milk/vanilla ice-cream yummy!!No one said it was gonna be easy!0
