A thumbs up to asian grocery stores

On the theme of Asian stores - for anyone in the West of Newcastle - the Medina stores on the West Rd and Nuns Moor are excellent for choice and price.
However not so good on fruit and veg - Hutchinsons on Stanhope St beats them hands down. Often get mangoes for 4 or 5 for a quid - all there fruit is excellent quality and dirt cheap.0 -

The smaller shops are great and still cheaper than most of the overpriced western shops but I tend to go to one of the Wing Yip stores where a lot of the shops buy their stuff from, extra cheap and sooooo much choice.
My nearest one is Nechells in Brum but they have three other stores too:

There are other superstores around too and I only tend to go once or twice a year to stock up as I prefer to buy my veg and fruit locally unless I want something like fresh galangal then I'll use my local small store in Worcester (round the corner from WhSmiths and just over the road from Debenhams)
They have some of their own branded sauces in Tesco's and Waitrose and Sainsbury's I think.
the choice is absolutely amazing most of the restaurants and take-aways also use these and you can just walk in no membership or trade only and compared to the cash and carries they're like a different world!
If you like cooking they do fantastic chopping boards and their mortar and pestles are like £10-15 for granite ones!
Try em you'll get hooked but don't go late morning on a Sunday they get chocker!Tips are good, tips are good, you know that tips are good!0 -
In Manchester I'd also highly recommend the W.H.Lung store underneath the Tai Pan restaurant on Upper Brook Street.
A very friendly supermarket type store with a cash and carry warehouse area attached (check out the carbon steel woks in there for about a £5 - couldn't resist getting a new one on Saturday even though my ten year old one is still going strong). Noodles, spices, sauces, chinese veg etc a lot cheaper than Tescos, plus it's always fascinating looking through the freezer cabinets trying to recognise all the stuff you'd never see in Tescos (once you get over feeling like a tourist as everyone shops around you).0 -

The best mangos are Alphonso!

I love the Pakistani mangos too. I'd never liked the look of them before (matt uneven coloured skin, funny shape) until an indian friend gave me a couple. Way nicer and cheaper than the shiny perfect Sainsburys type!!
When do they come into season? I'm currently only able to get the South American ones and leaving them nearly a week to fully ripen, but still nowhere near as good as the pakistani ones.0 -
Indian/Pakistani mangoes start coming to the uk end of April/May through to August. Yes alphonso mangoes are the best. If you are in London then a good place to get them is a shop in Kingsbury called Kingsbury fruit and veg. Usally they cost around £7.00 a box and you get approx 12 mangoes. If you are missing Alphonso mangoes a good alternative is the tinned pulp which you can get at most Indian/Pakistani shops. The tinned pulp is very thick we normally water it down a little. It is a very refreshing drink and beats some of the mango juices you get in restaurants.0
