Worldwide have a few stores in Manchester which are pretty good. We also particularly like the "green" store on stockport road in longsight - kinda opposite the library. I can't remember the name but it has a green shopfront and loads of veg outside.
We once got a box of red peppers for £3 in there. There were about 30odd peppers in the box. We chopped most of them and froze them. Fine for use in salsas and currys from frozen. Some of the freshest ones went in the fridge to use fresh in salads. Bargainous when considering you can pay £1.20 in a supermarket for just 3 peppers.
Fresh herbs and spinach are also very good.0 -
I absolutely adore peppers(except green ones). When I get home after buying them though I can never be bothered to chop them up! I usually leave it for a couple of days before I go near them again to chop them up! I really need to invest in some sort of cutting implement that will do the hard work for me.
I need to investigate Worldwide properly, there is one in Rusholme.
Friends of mine recommended Fine Foods which is also in Rusholme for fruit and veg but there are quite a few places along Rusholme that sell fruit and veg at a fraction of the supermarket prices.0 -
theres loads of them around here in East london ( bow, bethanl green, stepney etc)
Best buys are
herbs & spices
chillis loose eg bird eye? are they called( done by weight)
bags of rice I got a kilo for 59p the other day of basmati, half the price for double the amount I pay in Mr Ts
thinks like coconut milk powder are cheaper than any supermarket for jumbo packs
I go to china town now & then & get things like p crackers for frying, jars of sauce, rice noodles, pancakes for making duck at home the pancakes are about 35p for 6/8 in the chinese supermarket and I know Ive paid well over a quid in sainsburys for these before :money::beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
longsight has some great stores, and cheetham hill. from stockport rd,in logsight,i got 10 bunches of spinach for a pound, this was a while back and towards the end of the day.mind you took me ages to clean, chop, etc. shared hlf with my mum.brilliant.
another great store is in bolton, off derby st,got 800g of whole allmond, for £3.99.tesco has the same for £6 or £7.99,also 1 kilo of salted pistachios for £3.99 too0 -
the best part about indian grocery stores is the price!!
the customer service is rarely any good, but sometimes i dont blame them - they're earning a living and cant speak the language very well. but good on them for getting so far!
price comparison on a few things i buy all the time...
peppers - about 30p vs tesco's 69p
tinned fruit - loads of 3 for a £1 deals vs tescos ...er... nothings!!
tilda basmati rice - 2.50 for 2kg vs 4.99 at tescos
flavoured water (volvic) - 69p vs 99p tescos!
loads more, but i dont wanna tell everyone everything that i eat!!!!!'I love being married. It's so great to find the one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life' :heartpuls0 -

Watching this thread with interest as I am Asian (Indian).
For non-Asians in Manchester area to shop Asian groceries, one shop I highly recommend is Appna Continental supermarket in Longsight (Mitre Road, 50 yds north of Dickenson Lane off A6).
Fabulous store, good price, transparent (just like British supermarkets) transactions, parking and English-speaking helpful people. Try rice, frozen snacks, tinned food, meat, shellfish (frozen), vegetables, fruit, herbs, spices, and anything else. Their chicken somehow tastes much better than supermarket's, 3 baby chickens for £4.99 or 10 drumsticks for £2.99! Big packs of cashewnuts etc are much cheaper too.
I suggest experiment with one or two items at a time. Regarding vegetables, you may try aubergines (much cheaper, try roasted!), spinach, variety of beans, okra, peppers, but English vegetables are not cheaper.
Please let me know if I can help with any queries.
I know this post reads like their advert, but believe me, I have absolutely no financial interest with them. I do my fortnightly Asian shopping exclusively from them, though!0
