Well, you have to pay for free university places somehow!
It's pretty simple, really.

No it won't, this isn't a 'new' policy it's been around in various stores since 2009, as your own links showed

What are you going on about now, it is apparently new in Scotland, if you want to start ranting about that, take it up with the person who posted that.
I said it is already in place where I live, obviously as I have been victim of it.

I've followed this thread with interest and would just like to add my comments...
I understand where some of the posters here are coming from, The law is indeed 18 for Alcohol however from the "inside" cashiers and supermarkets are coming under ever increasing pressure from local trading standards not to supply under age teenagers.
First we had challenge 21 this worked - just - but still cashiers would be caught out by test purchases pulled off the checkout interviewed by the police and then given an on the spot fine of £80 and possibly the loss of their job.
Now we have challenge 25 and we have to check the ID of everyone we believe are under 25. This does make it easier but with this comes even more problems.
Please give a thought to the cashier and the store who HAVE to operate this policy in order to retain the licence to sell.
Trading standards can use a young person to test purchase - They ARE allowed to lie about their age then tell the truth in a court of law
From someone who see's this day in day out and has seen a friend totally devasted to be interviewed by the police and faced with a criminal conviction ALL stores now operated the challenge 25 rule - so if you are lucky enough to look 25 or younger take your ID and make sure any one with you have ID. Unfortunately this can be at worst embarrassing at best inconvenient0 -

Yeah but what about the humiliation to the customers who are (gasp) asked to provide ID! <rolls eyes>Please give a thought to the cashier and the store who HAVE to operate this policy in order to retain the licence to sell.

You still don't get it do you, think 25 is supposed to be used when it is in question whether or not somebody is over 18 in relation to buying alcohol.
As the staff and managers have no formal policy (at least in my tesco they don't) it is just operated however a particular checkout operator chooses to do so.
Along with this tesco staff believe it is the law to not sell alcohol to people who are over 18, but may not look over 25 and do not have ID (again this was the case in my local tesco).
My comments on this matter were from personal experience and a word of warning to others if this may be new and only just coming to your area.
However you just like to continually go on about how great think 25 is because you happen to carry ID with you everywhere, you are probably well over 25, you probably have no friends or family who would ever want to go shopping with you, so you continually go on because you think it won't affect you. Good for you!
I have said what I wanted to on the matter, it is you who keeps making comments about me, is it because you are lonely or something?! :rotfl:0 -

Aaaahhh, the casual xenophobia that creeps into EVERY discussion about alcohol or football. I know it is annoying being asked to provide ID when you are clearly over 18 but on the other hand I used to get served alcohol at barely 15 in just about every shop going and frequently go to nightclubs etc because I looked more like 20+. Now I am 28 and don't really look much older than I did then and sometimes I get asked but now I actually have ID so it's not a problem. In the US they always ask you for ID if you are under 30 and no one leaves the house without ID so it's not really a big deal to put an extra card in your purse or wallet just in case.0
