All seems like a bit of fuss about nothing!

If you do a google search for refused alcohol in tesco, you will see how many people have been affected by it.

As I said before, if this is only just coming to Scotland, that is what you have got to look forward too.

If your not bothered because you think it won't affect you fine. If on the otherhand you ever happen to go shopping with somebody who looks around 25, or somebody actually under 18, beware.

There are hundreds of similar stories on google:

Good grief I hadn't realised there were so many attention seekers in the UK "The nasty man demanded proof that I was old enough to buy age restricted goods!" Shock, horror! Some people really need to get over themselves.
Tesco response in one link was very clear - A Tesco spokesman said: "We take our responsibilities towards alcohol very seriously and operate a strict Think 25 policy. This means if someone looks under 25, and does not have appropriate ID to prove they are over 18, they will not be sold alcohol in our stores.
Additionally, if staff suspect proxy selling – that alcohol is being purchased by an adult for someone underage – the sale will also be refused" Part of the reason why http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7968626.stm

I find it interesting that the links go back as far as 2009 yet it's claimed that this is something new being introduced throughout Scotland only. Asda have a similar policy which was introduced in 2008 http://your.asda.com/challenge-25 and they're not the only ones http://www.talkingretail.com/news/industry-news/retailers-launch-challenge-25-alcohol-scheme

Mikewot - like I said just because you think it won't affect you, and your ok, doesn't mean that it hasn't and won't affect others.

I hope you never experience being refused your shopping when your with a person without ID.

How would you feel if some 20 year old (or younger) assistant said you can't buy a bottle of wine??
They are accusing you of being irresponsible enough to give it to your young child..who are they to belittle people in public. If the person handing over the money is old enough to buy then that should be the end of the matter..MR.T is getting way above himself..talk about Big Brother!!!!!
  • Yes, and our footy fans never ever get fire-hosed at away games? Why is that? ;)

Unless I'm very much mistaken Rangers fans made a pretty good job of trashing Manchester city centre at the Eufa cup final a couple of years ago so you may want to get off your high horse:beer:

C'mon now, Rangers fans aren't Scottish, you can't fool me - wearing England strips and singing Rule Britannia - there must be some kind of crazy mix up.

I'd feel that they were doing their job as dictated by the company that employs them.

Are they? Or is it the case, as I've argued in this thread, that they can be fined £80 and the store fined a lot more if they sell to under 18's.

Oh please get over yourself! You're attempting to purchase goods (like knives) which have a legal age limit, you need to show that you are above that age.

But Tescos and other shops have been prosecuted in the past for breaking the law so they are protecting themselves.

Not just Tesco, several of the big chains have an over 25 policy.

I know I'm sounding like an employee of a big chain, or a police officer, well I'm neither. I'm just someone who really doesn't understand the big fuss some people are making. You wanna buy booze, you look under 25 so prove you're over 18. End of.

I'd deal with it in a calm and mature manner. I have a friend of 35 who has 2 kids, one a teenager, but she looks like she's a teen herself. When challenged she produces ID, no fuss and no dramas.

Good for her, if she looks like a teenager and has trouble getting served she is probably used to carrying ID around.

You have failed to comprehend that whether I was over 18 or not was never in question, it was a case of asking ID to determine whether or not I was over 25.

Just take my posts for what they were and stop being so pedantic, going on and on and on.......

As I said just wait until the policy comes in near you and it affects you or somebody you know and no doubt your opinion will change on the matter. ;)
