You can no longer get, at Christmas, cheese-and-port gift packs, because the port has to be in the designated Alcohol Aisle and the cheese has to be in the fridge.
Now you will not be able to get any Dine In For £10 promotions with wine either.
That's really cut down on the binge drinking.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

All they need to do is Advertise: -
Buy this £9.99 bottle of wine and get all the food for 1p. Keeps the minimum price, if and when it comes in and doesn't include extra alcohol into the promotion

Exactly, Oneday. As if the big supermarkets will let that happen, missing out on billions :rotfl:0 -

Isnt that why in a lot of alcohol aisles they have a chiller?0 -
I think people are getting confused here. There is no minimum alcohol price in Scotland. The Scottish government tried to introduce legislation but it failed. It plans to try again next year but it is not the law. The think 25 campaign is a Tesco initiative following prosecutions for it selling alcohol to youngsters, it is not the law.
Throughout the UK the government has introduced a bill to bar the sale of alcohol at below the cost of duty and VAT. This sets a floor price of 38p for a can of lager, £2.03 for a bottle of wine, or £8.00 for a 700ml bottle of spirits. There was no implementation date set and I cannot find a date on the net so the OP may be talking about this legislation.0 -
How does the store know you're definitely over 18 unless you provide ID? They're the ones who get prosecuted and fined and potentially have their licence revoked if they sell to under 18's. You suffer no consequences so it is in their interest that they try their very best as a company to prevent their staff selling to under 18's. As it's extremely difficult to tell younger peoples ages this is the policy they've introduced. The law says you have to be 18 to buy alcohol, so you should only have to provide ID if there is any doubt you are not 18 or over. Simple enough.
The checkout person said, yes you are clearly over 18, but because you don't look over 25 you need ID to buy alcohol.
If you felt humiliated or embarrassed at being asked to produce ID (been many years since I was asked but I often offer
) then don't buy your alcohol from Tesco. I always carry my driving licence in my wallet and I'm faintly astonished that a lot of people don't. 0 -

It's actually the person on the check out who can face a fine - not the supermarket they work for so I can understand people being very cautious. When I was a student working in a supermarket - we took no risks against this! I always carry my licence around and don't mind one bit when people ask for it. Quite often the check out assistant will be quite embarassed about it but I understand they have to cover themselves.0 -

Therefore hardened alcoholics will simply pay more to fund their dependance. Weekend drinkers are mostly paying full price in bars anyway and the only people that will be hit are those that stay at home and enjoy the odd bottle of wine and they aren't the problem anyway.
I was delighted to be asked for ID in Asda recently (I am 31
), but I hope this doesnt come into effect soon with the promotions as I always buy nice wines at 3 for a tenner in Asda and drink at home. You're right that hardened alcoholics will find some way to fund it. 0 -
The legislation says they can't sell for less than the cost of duty and VAT, nothing about the cost of production/manufacture. The floor price would be £2.03 for a bottle of wine, so 3 for £10 is still achievableCheapchick wrote: »I hope this doesnt come into effect soon with the promotions as I always buy nice wines at 3 for a tenner in Asda and drink at home.
In fact very few (1 in 4000) supermarket offers will be affected by this legislation http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2011/feb/16/drink-minimum-alcohol-price-supermarkets-investigation0
