They don't like clove either...you can put little balls of cotton wool in the corners which have been soaked in clove oil, or we used the dried cloves on top of the door frames...don't smell as much too us but spiders don't like it..
Big conker tree near us so will spend the weekend gathering conkers and put them around the bedroom. I am not keen on them and neither is hubby, and big massive ones have us getting the hoover out...lol...xx;)I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY;)0 -
ugh I hate spiders with a passion. I dont see how anyone can catch them with a glass, just the thought of getting that close to them is way too much for me! I am truly terrified of them. My dad bought me one of those plastic spider catcher things, which goes unused because its only about a foot long, there is no way Im getting that near! So when my DH is not in, the only thing I can bear to use is the hoover with the attachment on it, and just touching that onto the spider gives me the shivers! Then I leave the hoover on for about a minute just to make sure...
Everyone I know seems to have reported loads of massive ones in their houses recently, touch wood we havent had 1 so far, so Im sure its only time.
I once had to sleep on the couch because one disappeared upstairs so there was no way I was sleeping up there. When we first moved in our house in 2007 we used to get loads, so bad that one night I stayed at my parents because my DH was not in and I was sick of them! but since getting double glazing it really improved.
The biggest Ive ever seen was one on our landing last year. And then this year working in Australia, I was cleaning the top of a blind and I thought I saw something move. But thinking Id imagined it (as wed been there for a month or so and I was trying to stop imagining seeing spiders everywhere I turned) so I carried on cleaning, and then over the top of the blind out came a massive Huntsman spider. I dont know how but I think i was so scared I didnt scream and just went running outside to get DH. Then one day he was outside and suddenly a Huntsman appeared on his arm, he tried to get it off and it ran up to his face!
Then we went to a family members house, and found out the day before shed had to go to hospital because shed been sitting at home watching telly, put her feet down the pine sofa, and got bit by a Red Back. NEVER EVER moving to Oz!!0 -
I am truly, truly terrified of them!! So imagine my horror yesterday when my toddler came running into the room crying that there was a spider in his potty!!! It wasn't a spider, it was the size of a tarantula. Big black hairy thing yuck! Gives me shivers just thinking about it!!
Also I've just had a shower, grabbed the towel and something landed on the bathroom floor - you guessed it another big hairy beast!! Screamed for DH to come and get it, he walks in and it zooms towards me!!! Aaarrrgghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!Thank you to everyone for sharing competitions!0 -
I've been reading this thread with interest as we've had loads of the big spiders in, even though I bought one of the plug in repellants last year. This morning about 3 15am I came to with a strange sensation on my arm, my eyes adjusting to the dark saw a large spider climbing up towards my shoulder. I flicked it so hard it flew through the air, but when I put the light on I couldn't see where it had gone. Didn't get much sleep after that and even checked my slippers and dressing gown before I put them on this morning ! Hoping I get some sleep tonight, must try to keep my mouth closed eek !
Regards
Trigger
:eek::eek: eeuugghhhh!!!!
we haven't had a lot of flies here this year, and so far, fingers crossed, I've not seen many spiders in the house either (we can live in perfect harmony in the garden, thats their territory, we can co-own the shed, thats fair enough, but the house is mine, not theirs, and if I catch them, I will squish them).0 -
we've had massive ones this year and last. They were truly trying to get me last year just after my C Section, we had 10 big house spiders in a week!!!
2 ran towards me on the settee and 1 ran towards me on my pillow, 4 were killed by the cats and 3 were on a curtain. YUK!
This year we had Steve, he's kept me company on Mat leave over the past year, he obeyed the terms and conditions of not coming out and just staying by the small table and behind the settee. However one night he did come out for a stretch and my god his leg span was easily the size of my hand, my hubby evicted him.
Conkers don't seem to work and I also have a plug in repellent thing.
I live in a small house so surely I should have small house spiders, that's how it should work and they shouldn't move so fast!0 -
ah well, looks like we have the good old British weather to blame for something else !!!
Thanks for the replies folks - I've chuckled at some of them.
And despite not being arachnaphobic, I've avoided clicking any of the links - just in case

Why are you all so scared?
They are only iggle, they won't harm you.
They only want to survive as much as we do, they are more scared than you are of them.
I've been told those cliches since a child, but they still don't wash! Get out of my damn house, you horrible horrible things!
After years of being scared/hating spiders, I came to a truce with them this year as the spindly things that make webs in the corners of the room would help catch nuisance flies, which I hate with a passion.
HOWEVER I cannot STAND those bloody dark brown, black things! I said to OH yesterday, what is it with all these spiders recently, I've seen loads!
OH doesn't want me to kill them, but he doesn't make a good enough effort to catch them, and they run off and leave me wondering where they've gone.
I went into my room the other night and there was the biggest muvvafckr hiding behind my door - BANG I got it with a handy book. It was so big, it still looked whole when it was squashed
Not looking forward to bed tonight... Very itchy!
Going to grab some conkers I reckon...0 -

If they make you feel uncomfortable just get a glass and some tissue and find somewhere outside where it wont get blown away by the wind.... Like I said, they are only trying to survive..
And where there is one, there is another, and then their babies....... AWE
Not read the rest of the thread, but I agree! I always pick em up and put them out.
Poor wee Spids - I'm hoping they'll eat all the crazy population of houseflies! The dog tries, bless her, but she always misses, and ends up running round like a loon, snapping her jaws at thin air
She gets 10/10 for effort tho :rotfl:I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

SPIDER HATERS LOOK AWAY - SKIP THIS POST
Does anyone else pick the invisible thread up when they are dangling from the ceiling, get slightly entranced at how quickly they leg it back up, then do it again, get more entranced at their super quick spinning abilities, then finally remember you are meant to be putting it outside..... and do so reluctantly coz you kinda want to see some more of its mad crazy spinning ability?I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Have to share this with you all. My Mum is terrified of spiders. I don't like them but am making the effort so my boys don't get frightened!
Anyway, one night when I was young, she and Dad were in bed sleeping (about 2am) when she woke up and saw a huge spider walking across my Dads face. Mum reached to her bedside table and picked up her reading book (hardbacked!!!) she then bought the book down hard on the spider! (Walking across my fathers face at the time remember!!!) Only problem was, she didn't get it the first time, so had to wallop it again.
I don't think that Dad was very amused at being woken in such a way!! But it makes me laugh every time I think of it. Yes, they're still married - 40 years!Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0
