  • Hey Cyclonebril,

Maplins do the batteries for about £15.00 - £20.00 for most alarms. Put a new one in my girlfriend's one a couple of months ago - alarm company wanted a huge amount for it.
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%

That's rubbish Birkee. Come one get real there's no arrogance in approaching a person that's doing something that causes you difficulty.

1, they may not realise it

2, I'm sure they would sooner have the chance to act themselves rather than get a visit from the police.

And 3, it is spineless to report someone without talking it through 1st

No arrogance in that, it's just what reasonable people do. and most people respect that.

The number of times a poster asks on here should I report so and so for doing this or that is quite amazing, and the standard answer is usually "have you talklied to them about it". And I happen to agree :p

I also agree if that doesn't work deal with it a different way.

I had an issue a few weeks ago.
I was working on my daughters wiring and had no way of turning the burglar alarm of as the internal battery had failed.
This activated for about 1/2 hr while I completed the work
Someone kindly called the council and reported it and a letter appeared a week later.

Would we have liked the opportunity to explain and apologuise?, yes of course we would but were'nt given the chance or even a clue that we were upsetting someone.

    Trying to see the humour in the situation I typed a note and attached it to the lamp post directly outside, it read;

"Thank you kind neighbour for reporting the alarm to the council, unfortunately if you had reported it to the police it would have saved the house being burgled"
curtain.gifcurtain.gifcurtain.gifcurtain.gif we must live in different worlds

You seem to have missed the point, that the OP had spoken to them about it, and was virtually told to get st*ffed*

I appreciate your point about the alarm, and agree with you. That was not something to report, but.....
were you repairing one of those damned alarms that go off nearly every day, running for an hour or two? How was the complainent to know that THIS was the day you were repairing it, rather than just another day to nearly drive them nuts?

I think the difference between us, is WHAT you report, to who, and why.

    Example:
House across the road, has rambunctious teenagers, who make the neighbours each side's lives a misery. They are always making lots of noise with illegal motorbikes, and riding round the area, with no crash helmets, no tax, and no insurance, and putting other people at risk. They break windows, and throw eggs at their properties, and give real grief, if anything is said.
What do you do? Turn a blind eye? Nice neighbour you are!
Or, do you report them, and become a victim yourself, because you identified yourself. Or, do you report them anonymously?

Maybe you speak to them first, and become a victim without even reporting them?

Like I said. Arrogance about reporting anonymously.

I didn't miss the point, that was my point, the OP did whay a normal civilised person would do, ie, try to sort the issue person to person.

Yes that failed why is which she came on here.
If she'd have done that in reverse you'd have been the 1st to say, "have you spoken to her about it??"

And again, in respect of the 2nd bolding, a simple "do you know the alarms on?" knock at the door, would have gained a polite apology and explanation.

We obviously move in different circles as I have never faced the issues you describe, it is the exception rather than normallity, and no, if I was faced with a known antagonist that was violent by nature then I would probably do as you suggest, but I must have been fortunate in giving people the benefit of the doubt.

You should try it sometime, or continue your curtain.gif methods
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

That's fine Paul, as soon as we had the issue I insisted that they replace the battery before I could work on the mains again. This is what they did, being reasonable people.

I used the example purely in context of this thread as an example of an issue that I, being hard of hearing didn't even realise was happening, ie, there was no internal alarm just the batery in the sounder box activated, that I couldn't hear in the house;), thanks anyway.

    You still miss the point!
There are reasons why someone might want to report someone anonymously, without YOU calling them spineless!

You then go on to allocate the characteristics you despise to me, which isn't the case at all, and I've always dealt with matters myself. But then I didn't call the other type of people "spineless".

I can resolves this entire dispute by simply saying that not all situations are the same. You have to weight up the situation, use better judgement and decide what to do. There are arguments for either approach and examples have been made here which are all perfectly valid.....

This is why neighbours should communicate more, know your neighbour and you'll know what to expect if you pop round and ask them to turn the music down a bit.

I have busybodies and curtain twitchers in my street (cul-de-sac), they're always complaining and moaning, they campaign together if anyone so much as tries to build a garden shed.
I have the Kitcar in the garage (declared SORN), it has to be started every week or so, just to keep the seals/etc in good order and im very careful to cover the number plates to prevent the busybodies reporting the noise, else I fear it'd get back to the DVLA and they'd slap a fine on me (as I'd be unable to prove it didn't leave the garage).....

So yeah, sometimes you have to be direct and sometimes (more so as you get into the retirement years) you simply cannot be direct.
“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

But there wasn't in this case, that fact escapes you for some reason. I'm answering the op, not trying to set guidelines for X's sake

    My point still stands.
If people think the 1st resort without any indication of a confrontational "adversory", is that the correct thing to do is to report them anonomously, then I'm in the wrong.
    Edited to add;
Missed stryders post while I was typing but yeah, that's the situation, the op was not under threat and acted correctly..........

I believe in dealing with matters with normal people in a reasonable way if that does'nt work as I said in my 1st post in this topic, there are other ways.

Put this in another topic if you really need to continue this exchange. argue.gif

  • I do believe some brake fluid, paint stripper and a sharp instrument along all nearside panels would persuade this horrible woman to move her car OP.
Somebody parked across my dropped kerb a few months back, did`nt cause a problem at the time and was only for about ten minutes, however. My issue is that there were other spaces on the street not causing an obstruction which they could have used..
