I love the name Ethan, my lot are Liam, Calum , Robbie, Ethan, and Zachary and my dd is Niamh. I found it was a nightmare choosing after they were born, particularly with twins. I even got a threatening letter after we hadn't registered them for 10 weeks because I couldn't decide. DH chose DDs name and I have never been sure because of the mispronunciation. The boys names were not common when I chose them(I thought) but Liam and Calum others had the same idea and I know quite a few now. The others seem to have become more common since I chose them. I guess we are all influenced by similar things even if we are unaware. The more you think about names the more strange they sound and the more reasons there seem to be not to use them. I liked Isobel and my DH said Isobel necessary... that spoilt that name for me! I also had a thing about calling a girl Raffia , he just commented raffia mat!
In the end I realise that most of my chosen names were names I had liked for years, even though I went through the books wrote the lists etc I ended up with the names I started with!
Ps keep the lists of possibles my little ones love me telling them all the wierd and wonderful things they could have been called.
Just a suggestion I think the name Soren is great for a boy and unlikely to become too popular but a bit different.
Good luck and enjoy the first few precious weeks, such a special time and so fleeting...

Deffo must be something about the name Connor as my cousin is called that and he's a little &$%*£($ :)

I like Ethan, Archie is my cats name (because of his brilliant kick a la archie gemmal (sp)) the other names are just strange.

Always will be someone who doesn't like the name/think its chav/etc etc, it's your child at the end of day.

Some right odd names at my daughters school - lots of American'esque ones aswell. Wrong spelled names feature a lot too.

Sorry, but non of them are my personal choice. I would be careful of Rogan he will be nicknamed Rogan Josh.

We had 5 names for my DS and couldn't pick, so he did! We put them folded in a bag and put his little hand in and he grabbed them in order and we stuck with it. He didn't pick my favourite, Christian and nickname him Kit! Or my second favourite where his intials would have been ROSS, so again had his nickname sorted.

It's just not a nice name for a baby boy is it? Imagine being a teenager called Huxley....

Like others have said though, it's a good dog name - I can imagine a big chunky chocolate lab would suit Huxley:p

After reading this thread, I've said her name with "Doctor" in front of it, pictured it being read out as a newsreader, and imagined it being shouted across the pub - and I think it sounds fine in all of those scenarios :).

I had my first born son's name picked out for years, but I also imagined his name being used if he ended up being a Dr, lawyer, politician, playing footy, in the pub, on a building site etc etc for ages whilst I was pregnant, and I reckon I managed to cover all the bases :D

He is the only kid in his school with his name, which is actually a biblical name (although as an atheist that didn't influence my choice). I said all along that pink or blue, their middle name would be my Mum or Dad's first name, and thankfully it fits nicely.

I did belatedly realise that I had doomed him to be forever at the back of the school line, as all 3 initials are made up of the last few letters in the alphabet... I feel a bit guilty now as he comes home moaning that he never gets to be at the front of the line :o

I think Ethan's a lovely name, but it's not very common here. I've only ever met 2 Ethans.

When I named my eldest the 3 most common names were Jack, Sam and Tom so I changed my mind about Tom and Sam because I didn't want him to feel like I did at school always having at least 6 Sharons in the class. What actually happened was there was never more than one Tom, Jack or Sam but there were 6 Connors in his class and 6 Chelseas! So I wouldn't choose Connor for that reason, but it seems to vary, I bet there weren't 6 Connors in the same class in other towns.

'Different' names are harder for boys. I wanted DS to be Rueben 13 years ago it just got snorts of dirision from friends - now I know about 5 under 3 Ruebens. Same with Felix.

Elliot instead of Ethan? Or Eli/ Elijah.

Rowan/ Rohan instead of Rogan - or Logan/ Morgan - though I'm not personally keen on Logan.

Or unusual versions of popular abbreviations - Ben (Benedict instead of Benjamin) Sam (Samson not Samual)

My 6 year old is named Reuben and I know most of my family hated it (and hardly anyone can spell it!).

I thought he would be the only Reuben in his school but there are 4 of them (in a school with roughly 200 boys) and we know a few under 5's named Reuben.

He likes it, but it annoys him that so many people spell it wrong. He likes to call himself Roo.

If I'd taken the advice of a member on here (whose username escapes me for the moment, I will kick myself later on) I'd have read or watched Cold Comfort Farm first though, and probably chosen a different name. Our surname begins with 'st' and I always wonder if teachers are reading his name and sniggering about Reuben Starkwater the lusty farm worker :rotfl:
