Whitby is far and away superior to Blackpool

I'd go with Whitby for a day out as there is more to do. Going to Harrogate centre probably wouldn't leave you with many more options than to go shopping and dine at Bettys (which is lovely but busy - Harlow Carr just outside Harrogate is quiter than the Harrogate centre one). Having said that there are things around Harrogate such as Bramham Rocks. I guess it depends what sort of day your looking for - both are lovely places

No offence to Blackpool, but is Whitby anything like Blackpool?

Oh dear, I just read that somewhere too. I hope its not this weekend. Ermmm, no offence to Goths either ;)
  • Thanks all, I think Whitby it is then, can't wait. Just been checking tripadvisor and there's a restaurant called graveleys with apparently great views, has any one ate there? Would it be suitable for a nice evening meal? Would be good to know. I definitely will be visiting magpies, but is that any good for an evening meal? I don't want to be walking around with a newspaper full of fish and chips looking for somewhere to sit down lol! x

Whitby is one of my most favourite places in the entire world. It just has this gorgeous village setting with a real 'lost in another time' feeling about it. The shops are fantastic and I've always enjoyed my meals there. I love the differance between the old side of town and the new. The abbey is a must see.

The goths have never bothered me. You might see one or two people walking around in victorian vampire gear but it is not like they are going to chase you, and bite you!

Definately nothing like Blackpool at all. It much smaller and compact, no fairground rides and just one or two amusement arcades that are dotted along the front (tastefully done)

magpie is good but long queues. Other than that its quite overpriced and they fry chips in veg oil so yuecky.

May I beg to differ? I ate in the Magpie last month. The Cod was fresh and wonderfully flakey and the chips were freshly fried and crisp. They lacked the stodginess you get with dripping fried chips.
