I hadn't realised the index authers thread was exclusive Queenie, I didn't think anything on OS was exclusive, except Martin and The Board Guides threads sometimes.
I know it is meant as a place where indexers can post ideas and learn from each other, especially just now when everyone is new to it, but I thought it was meant for all?
Once the indices are formed and we all, indexers and users, learn what works and what doesn't, it will be useful have suggestions such as your own, and maybe get new people involved, which has to be a good thing.
Anyway, being an indexer isn't exclusive, anyone can join in
I can't quite follow your logic on the searches, if you have an idea of which month it was when you read the post and find the merged dailies for that month, open it, and use the search tool within the thread itself then you should get specific posts relevant to your topic. If there are weekly instead of monthly records wouldn't you have to repeat the search 4 or 5 times? one for each week?Sorry If I'm missig something here.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

Ah, therein lies a difference in understanding
It does clearly state "Authors" not "users" ... a clear distinction
If it were for *all* then surely there isn't a need to put "Authors" at all??
On the one hand you state it is for Indexers and Users alike, but then you make a comment such as ... "Once the indices are formed (past tense)and we all, indexers and users, learn what works and what doesn't, (past tense) it will be useful have suggestions such as your own" (future tense).
Your post seems to imply that my query is ill timed? Apologies, I didn't realise I needed to wait until the indexes were formed and everyone knew what worked and what didn't before I made my suggestionHad that been made clear, I wouldn't have risked offending or touching a nerve by asking.
Do you recommend that I PM you in future to get clearance on the appropriate time to post a query? I understand you are a contributor to the bread machine indexing but I hadn't realised that you were a BG or even site owner, so I'm now quite confused to your role or the weight of your opinion???? Please clarify as I would really be upset for this to become yet another battle of words simply because of your personal preferences regarding posters
When I was taught English (and manners) it was a case that if something was clearly addressed to a particular group, it was *for* that group and it was considered "rude" to encroach. Or maybe, OS manners are not applicable any longer? Do please enlighten me if I am mistaken? If the modern trend is to read any and everything, I should surely go on the dole and sponge off taxpayers to bring up my children so I can keep abreast of *all* conversations on the board even if expressly posted for a particular group.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Racy - the index discussion thread is clearly labelled Index Authors Discussion Thread - of which I am not, so I still feel that as my thread is applicable to *all* OS'ers for their views and input (thanks Kat) that is why I asked that it not be mergedThere is an old fashioned part of me that doesn't read things which are clearly addressed to a particular group ... I know, bit odd, but that's old fashioned good manners for you - in the same way that I don't read over another typists shoulder, if you see what I mean? Equally, it would still mean reading through all the other index queries, which are not of the same relevance to me and my query.
It does say in the OP that the thread is for authors AND readers, but the thread title did only encourage authors to have an input.
I am going to merge this to the thread though and I'm sorry it's not really what you wanted. But when people are searching for info and input regarding this, it will be easier if it is all together.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
GR - please will you clarify whether we are permitted to make queries and suggestions or if indeed we need to wait until the indexing is formulated before making any queries "such as" mine (??) as highlighted by Racy?
I will also state, from a "users" point of view, that currently, "users" are being discouraged from USING the forums in ways which *they* wish to use them all for the sake of "indexing" and I have personally had a number of 'tut-sigh-am-I-doing-wrong" questions from users who are feeling that they are not welcome to begin threads and (quite frankly!) feel patronised by the way their posts/queries are being dealt with!
This is sooooo sad, because it is "actively" discouraging members. However, if that is the way forward, so be it!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BTW GR, welcome back
:T :T :T I thought you had left us when I read in a recent thread that the 2 OS BG's (squeaky and Pink) were having trouble keeping up with things - hence the need for yet more indexes and indexers.

Think it's alright to merge the two to keep comments together. Board guides usually have a note saying that is their role in their signature. There's only one site owner, no need to tell anybody who that is.Queenie wrote:Ah, therein lies a difference in understanding

Queenie, in no way did Racy tell you that your question wasn't welcome at the moment. She clearly said that she was under the impression that the index thread was for anyone AND that such questions would be PARTICULARLY helpful later. She is entitled to her opinion, just as you are.
Re Pink and Squeaky commenting on a thread that they were having trouble keeping up with things. I was not involved in that particular issue. That doesn't mean I am not around or involved and the only place I have been is occasionally in hospital as you know.
As you also know I am 3 weeks away from having my baby so it is perfectly natural that I am not as involved in the board as I normally would be. Even board guides are entitled to take 'maternity leave' even if on a part time basis.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I see.
The Thread Title:
It does say in that first post, and indeed elsewhere that members are welcome to post comments and suggestions. It was entitled with "Authors" because they were my primary target readers as I first began the posts, and indeed had intended to place the tutorial in there until it got too big.Daily Thread Archives:With ease of searching in mind, since you can search a single thread by using the "Search this thread" link in the top right hand corner - I deliberately chose to merge them monthly. That means only 12 posts to search to cover a year if a member can't quite remember when an Item was posted, instead of 365. Shifting to weekly would mean 52Posting and merging for the sake of indexing:Absolute rot!
Nowhere anywhere have I said that posters must entitle their posts in such a way as to help indexing. I have, however, explained to prospective authors the various things that they will see when they start their index and how to deal with them as they come up.
Merging is not done for the sake of indexing - it is done for the sake of members to try and help to keep answers to the same or similar questions in one place. So that instead of getting say... 23 results on how to make a pizza base and having to open and read all of them to find the particular recipe they like and know is there "somewhere" - they will be able to open and quickly scan only one or two.
Edit: Sorry, forgot to mention. I'm sorry to see that Queenie has received "tut tut" complaints about our behaviour...
..I've checked with Pink and Gingham and we none of us have received any such complaints.
Since we have not seen them - we can't read them and can do nothing to help explain or indeed modify anything unless we know about it.
If you have posted a complaint to Queenie could you please post it to your Board Guides.

I'd like to add that personally, I'd very much appreciate hearing from anyone who has been upset by a decision I've made. There are several thank you pms from members in my inbox at the moment for BG actions I've taken so if there are people who are upset it would help to know so as not to assume that everything is fine.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0
