My brain hurts now :o but I've learnt lots of new things.

I started at the back and worked forwards and now I'm back in 2007 :D. Thank goodness for that speed reading course I went on a bit since (and a relatively easy subject to see if a thread is relevant or not).

I'm amazed at how the volume of threads has increased over the last few months - a good time to organise the archives now before OS gets much bigger

I haven't indexed anything yet but I've got a huge folder of threads to work through and sort out :D and possibly do some testing in the name of research  . Still a huge amount of reading to get through as well as I just bookmarked anything in a folder to review later.

I've got a few threads that I will probably need to ask a BG to take a look and see if they are ok to include or not when I've sorted them out.

jessiecamb, I'd be happy to look through it for you when you're done, depending on when you have it ready. I'm 34 weeks pregnant so I won't be around for a little while soon.

    Hello :D

I've worked out how to get the links working (hadn't got the editing set up right  ) so am now able to get some links put through! Would someone go and have a look and see if I'm collecting the right kind of posts, and if I'm just generally going the right way about it? I'd appreciate it if anyone had a spare minute. Any feedback/suggestions more then welcome! :j (I'm on the 'thank you' collection if you need to check)

    Updating tip

I posted this on the volunteers thread but thought I'd write it out properly here, which is probably where it should be.

I found indexing can get daunting if I've left it for a while and have a lot of pages to search through for threads on breadmaking, but since I've been doing this it really help me to keep it simple. I even do it when I'm not able to login and have just popped in for a quick read (like when I'm supposed to be working ).

On your "usual" computer and browser, make a folder or bookmark. To learn how to make folders on Internet Explorer follow the instructions given by Microsoft HERE For Firefox, the instructions for making bookmarks are HERE.

Once done, whenever you are in OS, if you spot a thread which is a likely candidate for your collection, just add it to your folder by right-clicking anywhere on the thread, or even on the thread title if you are in the main board and don’t want to open the thread at that particular time, and selecting “add to favourite” or “bookmark this page/link” and add it to your folder.

Then, when you want to update your collection you have some, if not all, of the threads you need to add all ready in your folder. You can then check through the pages of threads added since your last update to make sure you haven’t missed any. I also do a key-word search on the thread titles, in my case I use “bread*” and that usually ensures I’ve picked up everything. If a thread is already in your folder your browser will tell you this if you try to add it again.

It doesn’t take long (unless I start reading all the threads icon7.gif) and is an easy habit to get into.

I hope this is of help. Have fun

    Jill

Edited to add - I forgot to say, if I'm browsing through OS on a computer at work or somewhere other than home and don't have my favorite/bookmark folder on that machine, I just pop the links to the threads I want to collect into an email, send it to myself then bookmark the links when I get home.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • I've hit a snag before I even start - I've tried searching 'jam', I used the search box at the top of the page, then the 'search this forum', then the advanced 'search this forum' - all came up with no matches, is the word too short? any suggestions?

I think you have to search for 5 characters or more

Edit: must be because I just tried to search for jam and got nothing but strawberry jam got 5 hits.

    Hi at,

The search only works with words of more than three characters. One way round this is to type an asterisk as a wild card at the beginning or end of the word you are searching for.

Try putting in jam* in the search this forum box. If that doesn't help let me know and I'll try to think of another way around it or try to help you find them.

  • Thanks Pink, I tried just the one* and got nothing but *jam* produced one thread with jams in the title not jam - I reckon that I'll have to have a jam hunt later today!
