Can we talk dishwashers now?

Do you want the 'true' answer or the short 'fine thanks' answer? :rotfl:

Ach it could be worse I suppose. It's been hard living with a terrible shower that only spits at you, central heating that wont go above 18 degrees or it trips the electric, no washing machine, tumble dryer, freezer and only a tiny fridge but it's not our forever home so it's just a case of biting the bullet and getting on with it. (And moaning about it a lot. :rotfl:)

However washing machine & dryer arrive today, and freezer has just arrived so things should start to get easier.:D

Lovely area (with plenty of green for those who remember my green worries :D) but nothing to do and only one local shop. Eldest is suffering a bit as he's got no-one to talk to and as he's an old woman, he's taking bad to that.

Daughter kinda settled in at school but still early days. It could all be so much worse though so trying to play down all the bad bits. (Until I feel the need to get it out my system by moaning again. :o:D)

We do have a dishwasher though. :rotfl:

You will get there. I guess the benefit of discovering the problems with the shower and the heating now is that hopefully you can get it sorted before winter. Nothing is ever straightforward when you first move into a place is it.

By the way I am glad you gave the 'true' answer rather than the 'fine thanks' answer. True friends never mind hearing how it really is and being able to offer words of advice. Keep going hun

They are especially good if you have a small kitchen and limited work surface space too. Daft question coming up but if you wash baby bottles in a dishwasher does it leave them sterilised. Am pregnant with twins right now and not sure if going to bottle feed or not yet. Ive been thinking if I do bottle feed then do we really need a steriliser and all that messing around if we could just chuck the bottles in the dishwasher. With god knows how many bottles it could be a quick and easy way to do loads in one go right? Or is the washing tabs and rinse aid not baby friendly?

Personally, I wouldn't rely just on a dishwasher for a newborn. The reason for this is that if you formula feed, the powder isn't sterile either, and so some nasty bugs can grow in the bottles. Very young babies don't have good resistance, or lots of weight reserves to fall back on if they get sick, so can become extremely ill very quickly. My little man who will be 2 in a few weeks has been hospitalized twice already with stomach bugs needing IV fluids (not from manky bottles but just picking up things from the big two) and the doctors take any vomiting in small babies very seriously in my experience.

When they get a bit older, then dishwashing alone should be fine but the recommendations are to sterilise either by boiling, steam or tablets for at least the first year.

I know some people don't sterilise at all, or stop when the baby is crawling, but IMO you have to weigh up the risks of that. I'd have a google of salmonella in babies and make your own mind up. I haven't had twins so am in awe of the work to come for you, but in your shoes I think I would throw all the bottles in a large bucket of Milton every day and take them out as you need them as the easiest way. I didn't have loads to sterilise as I was a bf and used a steam steriliser when I needed to but that only took 6 bottles at a time which might not be enough for you if wholly ff.

We have a slimline Beko in our rented flat and I love it. It's not the quietest though. It has 3 washes, rapid, normal or intensive. Taking 30 mins, 1hr 30 and 2h. I use separate salts, rinse aid and tablets. I couldn't do without one now :o

Lol, I signed up for the Which trial thingy when I was researching wm...I'll go see what they say about dishwashers, give me a mo'........

Edit: Are you after slimline freestanding or slimline integrated?

Beko tops the reliability table, followed by Siemens, Miele, Bosch, John Lewis, Neff, AEG-Electrolux, Zanussi. Whirlpool, Indesit and last, Hotpoint.

Bit surprised Beko outranks Miele for reliability.

  • My first dishwasher was an AEG but I had to leave it when my first marriage broke up :(

I bought a Candy to 'replace' it and that lasted about 10 years. Then I had an Indesit which worked so well that when I had a new kitchen fitted last year I got an integral Indesit.

I had to buy a new dispenser bit for my Candy and I remember the man in the shop telling me there isn't many parts to go wrong on a dishwasher, so I'd assume most makes are Ok unless you get a lemon.

There's only one slimline freestanding in the best buys table....Bosch SRS45E42GB

Dont know how it got there though cos it doesn't seem that great to me.

Pros: Excellent cleaning and drying, few watermarks, delayed start
Cons: Poor energy efficiency, very noisy

2 owner reviews, one gave 1 out of 5 , the other gave 2 out of 5

Main complaint was about the tray design being impractical and things fall over. Cleaning was ranked as good though.

If you have specific models you're considering I can check if there's a review for them?

  • Sorry to hijack the thread but....

Are dishwashers actually worth it? I've been uhming and arghing about getting one - Currently there is only me and DD at home - come dec there will be me, DD, OH and new baby and not sure whether it will be worth it in the long run

I wouldn't rely on it to sterilise for a newborn either, but from 6M+ when everything goes in their mouth anyway.

I also chuck hard toys in there to give them a clean, basically if not nailed down, it goes in th dw.
Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x

Was looking at this one Alias, gets good reviews on the next site. Noise level seems to be on a par with all the other makes at about 49db.

That particular model isn't listed, closest one is this. It scored 63%, but to be fair, most of the models that scored more, were full size ones and even then the top score was still only 77%.

Bosch SRS45E42GB which looks identical only it's white. It's on the Bosch website just above the model you stated.
