You could try http://www.savethebacon.com/

Has anyone bought meat from Jimmy's Farm
Organic chicken - dear but worth it.

Hi,
I ordered a 'winter warmer' hamper from Jimmy's Farm after reading that thread - I live in south Essex, it did cost £10 for delivery so £45 in total.
But I have to say the meat is/was supurb!
I am keeping a list of what was in the box, what I did with it and how many meals it made - I've posted it below, hope it helps! All my portions are large (we are both greedy!)
1 bacon hock - made bean and ham soup - 6 portions, plus ham stock in freezer for a risotto.
Minced beef - cottage pie - 4 portions
Braising steak - casserole - 4 portions
Steak and kidney - steak and kidney pudding- 4 portions
Diced pork - sweet and sour pork - 5 portions
Diced beef - Beef in ale - 5 portions
1 leg of lamb - roasted - 5 portions plus some sandwiches
So that's 33 meals, plus the risotto - and we do eat very large portions.

You will probably be able to find a smallholder who will be able to sell you half a pig or lamb. This are sold butchered so don't worry. Prices in Yorkshire are typically £100 for half a pig and £40 for half a lamb. You can usually specify any particular cuts you want, but obviously you do get all the bits which can lead to some very 'old style' cooking. This way you can see where the animals have lived, if you want to.

I use Donald Russell for beef, whole chickens and chicken supremes - never paid for delivery as I have always used their free delivery offers. I found their beef and chicken both excellent. Although the only cuts of beef I have tried are shin (in stews, slow cooked), heart of rump (slow roasted) and beef-rib trim (again in stews). Not tried their steaks (as I only occassionally eat steak) or their other roasting cuts as I think they are a bit pricey considering it's not organic or anything. I thought their lamb and pork was fairly ordinary though and the pork only comes from RSPCA freedom food approved farms, only ensures basic good practice and animal welfare.
Pork:
Best pork I have had so far is from Piperfield - they are in Northumbria but sell at the Edinburgh Farmers markets on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Saturday of each month and I think they will be doing mail order soon? http://www.piperfield.com/ They were featured on Heston Blumenthals BBC TV prog as the best pork - I want to try his Longhorn beef supplier too but they only sell a minimum of half a cow (!!) so will try elsewhere for that, perhaps here? : http://www.meridianmeats.co.uk/
Beef:
Best beef I have ever had is the rib-eye steaks from Higher Hacknell Farm in Devon - they do pork, lamb, chicken etc too:
http://www.higherhacknell.co.uk/
Lamb:
Best lamb i have had so far is the blackface lamb from here, they do pork, mutton, beef, veal and game too, but I haven't tried any of those yet:

General:
Swaddles supply decent meat and their chicken stock is fab for when you don't have/ don't want to make your own: http://www.swaddles.co.uk/
Otherwise, have heard good reports about these 3 suppliers and intend to try them soon, any reports from those who have used them would be great! :

Dont want this to sound rude, cos I really appreciate your help, but says in the box you only got 500g of mince, how did u make that into 4 cottages pies? I use that much on one pie?! Is that really bad of me?doesnt seem that big a portion

I think she means the cottage pie served 4 people0

I bought the same winter hamper as Lizzieanne and so far we have had
Mince: 500g did chilli - 4 portions (2 of us for 2 nights)
Diced beef: Beef stew - 4 portions - large portions too so probably should have stretched it to another meal, but we were being greedy.
Shoulder of lamb: slow roasted - 4 of us for one meal plus 2 of us with left overs the next day.
Still got to decided what to do with the rest.New year, no debt! Debt free date - 02/01/07 :j :j :j0 -
