:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Have some dodgy hugs, MrB ...

One minute the education secretary is effectively putting me out of job by scrapping my subject, then I only just get that sorted out and my loyal second-in-command was given the choice today to either resign or walk the plank. The knives are out and the buzzards are circling.

Is that about the cuts? Is that about individuals?

I feel the need to wear a poncho Clint Eastwood styley but feel this would probably not be a good thing round where I live. What's also pretty frightening is that a very wise associate of mine told me the other day that the best thing that could happen to me would be to lose my job, cos then I'd be forced to put into action all the plans, ideas and schemes I have, and would start making some serious money.

Erm .... you're referring to your associate as wise. Check with yourself that they are wise, and then ask yourself, why is a wise person recommending this? Maybe they're right?

But that is not the sort of advice I want. I like the safety net, heaven knows I've come close enough to hitting the wall even with it, so I hate to think what it would be like without the regular income.

Its a good point. Our abilities are only part of the picture - psychological aptitude, and your attitude to your commitments (the little Bloaters) also play a part.

But maybe you need to put a plan in place - get the debts down to a manageable level, for instance, really work at that, and then really work at generating other income streams.

Plus I love my job and without sounding too much like a conceited buffoon, I do make a difference.

I bet you do! I'm quite a lot older than you, and I can still remember a few moments at my high school, when a teacher really *got* me, saw me, my abilities, what I'd been aiming for, and its magical. But that doesn't mean you can't create other income streams, in spite of the demands of modern teaching.

Every morning I wake up and think this'll be the day I get back into running, and every day I can't do it. Hmmm. What's to be done? Answers please on the back of used fivers to Mr Bloater, Uncertainty Lane, SE London.

Well, you sound too stressed! Exercise is a stress reliever once you start, but in *trying* to start, its a stressor (thats what I think anyway - and of course, I'm omnipotent, so its true :) ).

Is running still the right form of exercise for you? Do you need a bit of a detox first? When you started up, weren't you walking, just initially?

Best of British, MrB, I hope you can find a way through it all.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Mr B but just wanted to comment on this bit. This idea that you must run is causing you more stress. You clearly aren't that keen on running - why put yourself through the trauma of making yourself run? It will have very little effect on your weightloss anyway - for that, changing your diet is key.

I used to try to run - I'd do spurts of it for a few weeks, then give up. I live in beautiful countryside/hills but avoided going out because I didn't want to run. Now I've stopped trying - what's the point? I go for a lovely walk instead or I get on my bike and go for a spin. Both these have greater appeal because you don't need to do it on an empty stomach (I had to have an empty stomach before running or I'd feel sick). Now I can stop for a while, sit on a rock and have a lovely cup of tea out of a flask. Simple pleasures, but bliss, and so much nicer than running!

Put the whole running thing away for a while, that's what I say. :)

Have to agree with no running at the mo if it is a source of stress.
What you need to do is find the exercise that is right for you~easier said than done I agree.
I have a trike and I like to go out for short distances on that but only when weather is ok.
Trouble is that at the moment Im struggling to get on it.Ho hum.
    So my search continues :rotfl:
    Keep plodding.

  • Mr B, I completely feel your pain with the MIL - I'm getting married in the summer and after 6 years with my fiance she still doesn't like me! (think it's to do with the fact that I'm a feisty independent redhead who doesn't keep quiet and also because her son moved 75 miles away from her to be with me) I'm at the stage where I've given up trying to impress her and do things my way! We have a wedding to plan that we would like our way, not her way - thank God she doesn't live round here.

With regards to your job, I can only suggest that you do what makes you happy and keeps a roof over you and your family. I'd love a permanent teaching job and am not sure how much longer I can continue on supply.

mr b i think running is the most exhausting and hardest exercise you can do, i hate it. As a sort fo teacher i know how knakerising it can be after a long day and going for a run would be the last thing on my mind. So I'm wondering if you can do your fitness at the week end with the kids, try hiring bikes/skates/horses, go for a walk, trampolining, geocaching, swimming, frisbee in the park etc
  • Be kind to yourself Mr Bloater. Toe by toe.

Someone has just been killed at the top of our lane overtaking a JCB. Puts my probs in perspective. I actually feel a bit faint thinking about the poor sod. My job is pretty safe and I feel ashamed at how low I've been all month.

I think to keep your sense of humour when everything around you is wobbling, (I won't joke about your lack of a run), well Mr B I think you're a marvel I really do and I for one am trying really hard to take a leaf out of your book and attempting to find the sunshine. Who knows what the future holds. I think sometimes, it's important to not plan too much and live for the day.

Evening all. Interestingly enough, those on here who quite wisely are suggesting I try something other than a run are giving me exactly the kick up the backside I needed, as I now find myself in the position of wishing to defend running. Cos difficult as it is to get out of bed, there is nothing I've found as brutally efficient at shedding the pounds than it. Plus I get my stories, plus that inspires me to come on here, and everything can go back to the good old days of September / October when the only shedding I was doing was of weight rather than playing around in sheds. Tomorrow would be an excellent day to start because I have to clear the loft for the free insulation fitters on Wednesday (cheers MSE.com for that - should cut down the heating bills considerably as the existing stuff up there is useless. I also got too sucked into the ebay thing - whilst I literally have a shedload of stuff to get rid of I have to just do it like this month in a 100item listing flurry at the start and then forget about it til the next month rather than dribs and drabs. OK, am feeling more motivated than in a long long time - thanks for all the support, I feel things are slowly getting back on track. Watch out you early morning ne'er-do-wells of SE London, the accusing eyes of Bloater will soon be back....
