I have searched but can't find just what I want. Has anyone any bright ideas to get oil out of clothes - both the drop of oil/butter down the front of t-shirts (OH's favourite trick!) and some drops of bike oil my son managed to get onto his daughter's waterproof coat!

I googled the last one and have tried all the suggestions - using neat w/up liquid and rubbing surfaces together, white spirit (which didn't touch it), carpet cleaner etc. etc. It's fainter but it's still there. It's probably too late now as I have washed it again in the machine and it may have 'set' in.

The splodges on the front of every single t-shirt my OH owns is more annoying as I cannot remove them totally no matter what I do. I keep getting new ones (from charity shops mainly) as it looks awful when there's a mark on the front of everything he wears.

Please can anyone come up with any suggestions?
  • i always keep a pot of swarfega (sp?) under the sink to get oil out of clothes
it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:
  • my OH used lighter fluid on one of my jumpers that I'd managed to spill grease on after eating barbecue ribs. I'd already washed it and they hadn't come out, but this did the trick straight away and then I just put it back in the machine to get rid of the petrol smell . He said I didn't need to do that as it would have evaporated if I'd hung it on the line but I can't stand the smell of it so had so wash it again. :D
  • You could try making a paste with bicarbonate of soda and a few drops of water and spreading it on the stain.Leave for 30 minutes and then wash with a biological detergent. As the stain isn't fresh,I'm not sure you can now shift it.

I'd suggest liquid soda crystals for oily stains. Leave to soak for at least half an hour..then put in the wash and add some regular powder soda crystals.

Washing waterproofs is always difficult. They have to be gentle and not contain detergent or enzymes (ie biological washing powder) as these will strip the DWR. Use soap flakes or a specialist product from the manufacturer. You may have to retreat occassionally.

I stayed at my grans recently and went out on my bike in my jeans - big mistake (38 going on 10!), well my chain fell off and as well as getting my hands covered in oil I managed to get my jeans caught up on the chain. So when i got back to Grans she said rub it with fairy washing up liquid (I though silly old fruit bat!) but it really worked, we just poured fairy liquid liberally on stain and rubbed it, I have the jeans on now and they are completely oil free and were even before they went on the machine!

Miracle worker. Sadly I won't have it in the house as its made by proctor and gamble Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

  • I have this problem - but I'm usually the culprit! I find Shout stain remover to be really effective. I'm so bad at dropping food down my front I normally change into scruffs before cooking/ eating dinner and I keep the stain remover in my bedroom and spray any stains before the clothes go into the laundry basket.
Don't judge people on they way they look, the way they speak or what they're called because they can't help that.

Only judge people on what they say and what they do.

I have a friend who whilst eating chicken legs had the fat drip onto her new jumper. She has washed it I believe and have suggested White Wizard but I wondered whether you guys had any idea on how to get this out please?

    Thanks very much.

I always put Fairy Liquid on the stain and then put it through the wash as usual
As my dad always used to say 'Just because you've got the money doesn't mean to say you have to spend it all at once'
