Hello Robin,
We need to learn to sleep. I'm full of morphine, no pain but no kip either.
I'd seriously be up for a trip if you fancy. I'm fine on boats - big boats not tiny sailing skiffs that try to kill me. Trains and planes or driving. Buses are my nemesis. I'm sure one of the rings in Dante's Inferno has the number 26 bus route going round it.
It would be great if CD could teach Misha some good habits. Nice full stop if we could take them up. I'm happy to drive. I suppose any dates, if it has to be winter for the lights, will involve taking a punt on weather. Hopefully Mara and Pippi can advise. But tbh it's what we make of things and I'm sure it'll be great regardless.
How's the flat procurement going?

Okay ! Id love to meet up with some of you guys ! Now the Merry Dancers as we call the Aurora Borealis, dont perform to order, but cold calm frosty nights are the best, So anytime from now till February is a good time. The best display I ever saw was a few years back, the whole northern half of the sky was filled with dancing lights, whites, greens reds and blues, the air was crackling with the electricity of it. Absolutely mind blowing, and this lasted fo a good couple of hours.
Now Ferries .. The cheapest option is called Pentland Ferries, sailing from beside John O Groats right up in the north of Scotland, Google them .. The other option is Northlink who also sail from Aberdeen and Thurso, but Aberdeens more like 8 hours instead of the one hour option with Pentland ferries...
I have two double spare rooms which you lot are welcome to use, But can also arrange accommodation in town if thats easier for you guys (Im 20 miles from town .. and more like 35 miles from Pippi )
Think Im getting over excited here !! lolIts just a bad day, Not a bad life .. :cool:0 -
We should really try and get something organised with yourself and pippi ... Although I think pippi is just a little busy today to be chatting about any plans lol
I hope she is having an amazing day ... And her wellies whilst getting worn are not really needed but more for comfort0 -
Hi All.
Looks like there's a real appetite for a trip really far up north.
I'm very happy to explore ferry prices and happy to take my car up so room for passengers if Edinburgh round trip helps anyone.
Who fancies the idea? And what sort of dates?
Mara can we use and abuse you to help guide us?
So exciting :j

First bit of research.
Taking Mara's advice I looked at Pentland and Northlink Ferries.
Pentland sails out of John O'Groats which is almost 300 miles (6 hours) from Edinburgh.- Ferry crossing is an hour.
- A single trip is approx £14 per person and £33 per car.
- They sail about 3 times a day into St Margaret's Hope, South Ronaldsay.
Northlink sails from Scrabster in Thurso which is also about 300 miles from Edinburgh.- Ferry crossing is about 1.5 hours.
- A single trip is approx £18 per person plus £52 for a car.
- They sail 2 or 3 times a day into Stromness.
Northlink also sails from Aberdeen which is also about 150 miles from Edinburgh so 3 hours driving.- Ferry crossing is about 8 hours.
- A single trip is approx £18 per person plus £40 if you want use of a cabin plus £133 for a car.
- They sail once a day and come in to Kirkwall.

Ooh this sounds exciting! Mara, I didn't realise you were up on Orkney too, it sounds so amazing. Though yes, Pippi is elsewhere today :j
I do remember Cheery Daffs heading up there one Christmas to do some house sitting, and the shenanigans were absolutely epic - trains snowed in, trains pulled out, ferries full, ferries cancelled, it was mayhem. Made a brilliant story at the time tho! Just saying
I'll definitely be cheering the lot of you on :beer:2023: the year I get to buy a car0
