£89 HP touchpad

AMAZON is testing a major redesign of its website, an overhaul that could refashion the way people shop on the world's largest online retailer. The changes were expected to make Amazon's site easier to use and to navigate on a tablet computer, online commerce experts said, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.
Seattle-based Amazon was expected to introduce a tablet computer in coming weeks, people familiar with the device have said.
Amazon spokeswoman Sally Fouts said in a statement that Amazon started testing the new design last week.
"We are continuing to roll out the new design to additional customers, but I can't speculate on when the new design will be live for everyone," she said.

First one, out of curiosity:
There was a 15 minute flash sale of HP Touchpads on the PC World Business website earlier this week. Was any one lucky enough to get one and did they fulfill the order?
Second query:
Never purchased anything from the USA on ebay before and I am thinking of taking the plunge and buying a touchpad from a US seller.
(Set my limit at £150, as really want one and from a usability perspective or spec wise. None of these cheap budget ones comes close for this sort of money!)
Am I liable for VAT or any other customs charges above what I pay to the seller for the item and !!!!!!!!?
( second hand iPad 1 can be got from £190 upwards on EBay) and this has thousands of free apps!0 -
I think things really are out of control here your buying a dead tablet that won't be updated with little apps that may or may not work that well over a successful proven tablet for a saving of £50 maybe less?

You are mistaken if you think the OS wont be updated. HP have said themselves they are abandoning the tablet/mobile market but will continue to update/support/maintain the WebOS software.
Adding to this the amount of touchpads that have sold over the last week or two worldwide, that is quite a community which will help the number of apps grow just like they are doing on the apple app store.
There may be thousands of free apps on the apple app store but atleast 80% of them are completely useless and in all fairness will not be missed (I know this, I have an iPhone and hardly ever use the apps I've downloaded from the app store.0 -

You are deluded if you think that the developer community for WebOS is going to grow in the same way that it does for iOS. Even if you don't use 80% of the apps on the appstore, you're saying there are still 100,000 useful apps.
The touchpad has gotten into a lot of hands that it wouldnt have otherwise gotten into, but Apple owns 90% of the tablet market therefore 90% of the market for people purchasing apps, so the incentive for people to produce groundbreaking and innovative apps isn't really there. Obviously there will be some developers catering to the needs of the WebOS market, but not many, as if you arent going to develop for iOS the next logical choice is Android, leaving only the big companies that can afford the resources to be multiplatform, and hobbyists/developers trying something new and the homebrew community.
Thats what I cant get to grips with in the posts on this forum, its a great little tablet for £89 but having had a go of one for a few hours its not worth much more than that, and HP cant justify maintaining the product at that price range once existing part stocks run out, but people seem to be trying really hard to convince themselves and others that this is just as good as, if not better than an iPad. I mean it does flash, afterall!! :rotfl: My mum has picked one up and for her its ideal and a bargain, but even she would probably rather have an iPad, but that obviously carries a higher cost to it, but at least you know that if it breaks in 14 months time, you can buy a new one/claim on insurance and the same or newer version of your hardware is going to be there to pick up where you left off. What do you do with your ecosystem (Apps, saved data, settings etc) when these break and theres no more stock to replace it from? For me, that alone is a dealbreaker.
Also your app-using habits are not other peoples. I constantly download and use apps for both my iPhone and my iPad, as does everyone else I know with these devices. It seems a little odd to download apps and not use them?!
Also yes HP have said they wont abandon WebOS, but I think we all know what a company says and what a company does are often two different things and I think if we look back on this in 3 years time WebOS will be about as common as people using Netscape as their browser.0 -
Some good points in there ashe, but I think you're being slightly negative, then again a lot of people have also whipped themselves into a frenzy NEEDING this thing without actually knowing why.
Problem is the dust hasn't settled yet. You may or may not believe HP (I'm not sure!) but deals are yet to be done (or not) and you definitely can't make statements that webOS, and the Touchpad WILL or WON'T be supported, developed for in the future.
You forget also that webOS has the most enthusiastic, if not the biggest, community around it, including developers and loads of them have already stated that they're not done yet with webOS.
You've tried out a Touchpad? Did you multitask? Does it not blow the iPad (and Android) away for managing multiple running apps? Unfortunately it's an iPad 1 competitor that came out when the iPad 2 was already here, but even then, it has some serious advantages over the iPad 2.
HP have no intention of selling Touchpads for £89 - they discontinued them, sold them off cheap, and now are doing one last run to sell of cheap again, to get rid of parts they've already paid for.
If it hadn't been abandoned, I'd still be recommending it over the iPad.
BTW, most of your saved data will be automatically synced to the cloud, GMail etc, so don't worry about that. I know that iPads still have to plug into a computer to sync, but webOS is a bit more advanced than that ;-) - Apps are another matter of course, but EVERYTHING can transfer onto a second hand eBay model (which will be nice and cheap) 14 months later if that does happen.
Lots of people download lots of apps, many of which are gimmicky, and might get used once or twice.0 -
