rosybunny06 wrote: »Hello I would appreciate any advice on getting gas installed to replace economy 7 heating in a small Housing Executive bungalow. Can I get a grant to help with the costs or a social fund loan? Can anyone recommend a trustworthy company to do the job? How much should it be? Do I ring Phoenix to see if the street I am moving to is connected? My husband and I are both medically retired/disabled and need easy cheap reliable heating.
Thank you for any information.
Also bear in mind you need housing executive permission to change to gas, and you then become responsibly for the entire system. If something breaks down or there's a leak, you'll have to call out a plumber at your own expense. The housing executive won’t deal with it any longer.0 -
On average how long should a decent gas combi boiler last? I'm in my house 5 yrs now and just recently my Ideal Mini C28 combi gas boiler has started to give a little trouble. I contacted the manufacturer when i moved in to get an indication of when it was installed and its approaching 10yrs later this year.
So just wondering if anyone with any knowledge about gas boilers could advise me is it worth throwing out money to try and fix an 'old' boiler or should i bite the bullet and consider a new boiler.
The issue seems to be it has trouble firing up and starting, and then sometimes the pressure level drops down very low.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated by a damsel in distress!0 -

Quick question about gas combi boilers... Are they quiet when running? I'm thinking of getting gas installed and the boiler would be in my hotpress, right beside my bedroom. I'm a very light sleeper and wondered if it would wake me when it comes on? (The boiler I have in mind is made by Vailant)
I would appreciate hearing anyone's experiences of sound levels of these combi boilers0 -

For what exactly???
Boiler type? any extra Radiators? Any flushing? any new vales? Any new pipework....
What's all included in the price?0 -
Ive no idea to be honest. I just said it was a 3 bed semi to your man and he said he'd need to look at the house to get an idea but ball park £2100. The 3 bedrooms upstairs would need a new double radiator each i suppose. The downstairs ones are fine. Do you have the PM of installers to avoid? Just to say as well i do not mind paying a bit more for a good quality job with a good quality boiler if that would impact the price much i'd like to hear. cheers0

First and foremost....... make sure you know exactly what they are quoting for. You could get 10 different quotes all quoting something completely different. Also get a quote/figure for "unforeseen" extras... i.e. If you want to change Current Radiator valves over to Thermostatic Valves (more Energy efficient) then what brand would they use and how much to supply & fit per valve....
Are they planning to pressure test the system?? If you are going from an oil fired vented system to a combi, which is pressurised, then a lot of the time old pipework/joints can leak...... how will they approach this if it happens and what work will they do and not do...... some people can be funny in that they won't touch your floors, ceilings or walls, you would have to get a builder in to do that...... may sound silly and I haven't come across it but it can happen...... a lot of plumbers WILL NOT touch electrics so who is going to do that?? will they get someone in?? is it included in the price???
If you are changing your boiler I would seriously think about flushing your current system out at the very least if not change all Radiators..... Modern Gas boilers do not like dirt in the water and trust me an old system will have a lot of carp in the pipework.
DO NOT take a quote over the phone or via e-mail.... get the plumber out and talk through the whole thing with them..... get a detailed quote and then consider...... it's a lot of money you'll be spending to get it wrong!!0 -
