  • I've just read through this entire thread! I'm about to move house so hoping to make a little bit of money from selling things I don't need anymore.

I've only sold a few things on eBay over the years but my best has to be the lamp I got free in Trafalgar Square in a big promotion they were running to promote energy saving lightbulbs. It was huge and just sat in a corner gathering dust for about a year. I decided in the end to get rid of it but thought I'd put it on eBay for 99p just to see what would happen. I had a few bids quite early on then got an email from a man asking if I might be able to end the auction early as he worked for an advertising agency and he needed this exact model for a photoshoot. He said he only needed it for a day and that he was very sorry but his client's budget for it was only £75! He came to pick it up too! Then, I hadn't ended the auction but the next day, he sent it back!!! The £75 was only loan money for a day apparently! And he'd put a bulb in it and fitted it with a plug. So I then went on to sell it on eBay for £36!!! Amazing what you can sell sometimes!

Someone left a mobility scooter in a neighbour's garden. The joyriders round here are quite old. They checked with the police who said it hadn't been reported. It looked quite smart but the battery was duff. He wheeled it out next to the bins and I promptly wheeled it into my garage and e-Bayed it for £60. The buyer had a spare battery and wanted a foldy scooter for the car for his disabled wife.

I think that made up for the things I've sold on ebay for less than they were worth over the years.

I had a tiller that I bought to do the garden. It was absolutely useless and in a fit of rage I threw it on the skip. I then thought twice about it and took it back and put it on eBay.

Worded the advert something like (in big red letters):
    Tiller/Rotavator/Cultivator for sale
Used once – it was useless!

Listed it for 1 pence – pick up only.

It went to a bidding war and sold for the grand sum of about a fiver. More important though, the buyer was absolutely delighted with it and gave really good feedback.

I got some cosmopolitan curling tongs free with the magazine about 5 years ago. Last week I listed them on ebay for 50p thinking I would get about £1 for them. They sold for £15!!

I've just sold half a bottle of Chanel perfume to a guy in Bulgaria for £30 after he begged me to end the auction early, apparently he was going to give it as a gift!! Is there a perfume shortage in Bulgaria?
Even better the perfume was free as it was one of my mum's cast offs!!!

God, typical man - half a bottle of perfume better than no gift at all!

    Well done you!

There is no point in negative thought, it takes up time and energy which could be used in a positive, happy way!

Buy a dress for £1 and sell for £50? Now that's a good profit!

I think the big secret of Ebay is that most people are still basically too lazy or unmotivated to have a go; they'd rather throw away £100's worth of stuff than try selling it.

So long as what you are selling is safe, legal and honestly described it's a great way to make money and recycle at the same time.
