  • Thanks to this thread I have listed 17 items today some of which I meant to list for a while and others I am trying out to hope they sell. I then intend to try and list some things I never thought anyone would buy! EG found 3 jars of in date ground mace spice - I'll never use all of this. Will hope someone can give them a new home and use them

  • What a FANTASTIC thread !
It would be very helpful if everybody who had good result from selling unlikely
items on eBay to tell us under what Category they listed their "stuff" on the eBay website and the starting price.

This is usually vital to a good sale.

    Thanks everybody

I sold some old 8 track tapes for over £25. Thought they would be worth very little these days. Started at 99p
Not been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/155

I have just sold an old pair of work boots. Got £3.00 They went to a guy who judging by his feedback buys quite a lot of used shoes/boots, and other leather gear.
I wanted them to go to a good home to be placed on a quiet shelf in a shed so that they may see out the rest of their lives in tranquillity.
Judging by the guys feedback this may not be the case and could be a whole new and exciting chapter in their lives.

To see the sale go to http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130253781911

Go to www.foggydave.co.uk and go to 'Story update newa and ebay listing' to see other Ebay sales

Rubbish dumps.. they're all called "recycling centers" now and the men in yellow jackets who "work" there (I use the term loosely) all seem to have turned into clipboard-wielding jobsworths.:naughty:

Fair enough, people need a bit of prodding to make them recycle instead of dump but it p*ss*s me off when I see a pair of florescent-jacket men busy scavenging for re-salable items or sitting on a rail while some little old lady is struggling to heave a box of junk into a skip or giving people a chewing-off for dumping mixed-waste into the "non-recyclable" skip; my dad is a stubborn twit (replace the vowel "i" with an "a") who always thinks he's in the right, but he does have his moments; the last time one of the yellow-jackets whinged at him he said "well, you work here don't you? So do your f**k*ng job and recycle it then!".:rotfl:

I know a guy who used to work at the local dump (as they were called back then) and although he was at the bottom of the pecking-order he knew the other workers all spent half the day cherry-picking stuff they could resell at car-boot sales.

In the old days - back in the 80's - you could go to the dump and give the guy at the portakabin a fiver and load up with a couple of old bicycles, but now they won't let you because of "health & safety" rules, ostensibly meaning that they don't want people selling dangerous broken junk or faulty electronics goods at a car-boot sale or getting hurt rummaging in skips... that's their job. ;)

Whenever I take anything to the recycling center that I think could be resold I smash it up first but after reading this thread I'll have to think whether I can sell them on eBay - the modern equivelent of a rubbish dump. :p

What a great site on at least two counts.
    1. Marvellous money generating ideas
    and
2 Really funny writers such as this
    correspondent.
    Excellent.

I listed some half used no longer wanted or liked beauty items, I would have thrown away previously, at a low starting price and, surprise surprise, people have bid on them!

I am amazed that people will buy what I once would have thrown away. Thanks to this thread for the idea, I'm going to look and see if there's anything else I would chuck out and see if anyone wants it for a small price!

One set looks like its going for a similar price to a brand new one I sold before chirstmas and I nearly threw it out! Having said that I would rather someone else made use of it if they want it rather than me chuck it out! :D

  • My daughter has just sold a pushchair which she bought second-hand 2 years ago, used extensively, and has now made over £60 profit on :T

I do think a lot of interest is culled from having very good, clear pictures of the item you're trying to sell. Dark or fuzzy pics don't bring in the money.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
  • A broken mobile phone which went today for £10.50.

And a load of old studio colour pencils and pastels from my days as an art student - £13.50.

OH has found a load of old Atari games and a joystick in a house he is renovating, so they will go on as well.

Anyway, I find that it's not worth selling stuff unless you're pretty sure it's going to go for over about £3 because of the cost of listing fees and final value fee and then the paypal fees (which seem to be huge, especially if people pay with credit cards). how do you guys make money out of stuff that only sells for about £1?

I've been wondering about it as well. I mean, something sells for 99p, it means you probably pay up to 25p for listing and final value fee, plus PayPal charges you a bit, so what do you have left? And it probably took some time to take the picture(s) and describe whatever you were listing...then you might have to queue at the post office...is it worth it for 50p result? I mean, if you have LOADS of free time and no means of getting money more efficiently...

I've been sort of inspired by this thread as well, but when I look at how much time and possible stress (because you do get stupid customers sometimes) you may get for a potential minuscule return...plus you may make a loss if your item doesn't sell or sells cheaper than you bought it for...How about that?
