I've done Avon for many years and I've observed that the clearance book bargains are pretty much duplicated in the main catalogues. Each rep is on a fixed mailplan and some reps will always get first pick of the clearance items and some (like me) will often find them OOS. Every main catalogue has MOST of their items at a discounted price, whcih occassionally appear at full price in another catalogue. I have taught my customers to watch for the discounted price and work hard to point out the bargains and show how much I value their loyalty and custom.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't need teaching to watch for discounted prices and bargains.
I can do that all by myself.

I'd just feel that a rep wasn't giving me the opportunity to decide for myself if I wanted to buy something if they didn't let me see all that was on offer in a campaign.

I wouldn't need telling that the item might be OOS either - the 'Clearance Sale - while stocks last' message that's printed on every page of the clearance book would give me a big enough clue.

80% of my customers are pensioners, not always quick to spot bargains or even read the size of the print. I'm sorry you find my type of customer service not to your taste. My customers are all my close neighbours and many of them are personal friends.

Oh well, it's a good thing you're not my customer.

In that case, I still can't see why you don't show them the clearance book and let them make their own minds up.

    I still think this.

For example, I've bought a couple of Patrick Dempsey 'Unscripted' 30ml bottles of EDT from clearance books for £3.00 each. I've not seen these in the main brochure.

Many customers don't notice this, even though it's clearly printed.

Even if a customer knows the item may not arrive, they often don't order an alternative. The rep has to decide to do that themselves but it's not a practical option for a lot of reps. I recently ordered lots of duplicate items just in case, which I won't be needing, so they have to be stored in the house until it's time to return them. I'm fine with this, but some reps don't have the space and have awkward returns set-ups to deal with (such as couriers who don't pick up items left in a designated safe place, or don't sign the proof of return) so they like to keep returns to a minimum. They wouldn't choose to put themselves in a situation where they end up with a lot of surplus stock.

If there isn't a suitable alternative for an oos item and the customer hasn't ordered something else just in case, they'll likely go elsewhere to find a similar item if they can't wait 3 weeks to choose a different Avon product.
I used to have my Avon turnover (sales) here. They've been removed because it's not appropriate to talk about those kinds of sales as if they're realistic for a new Rep to aim for. :( I signed up at the right time, right place, and was very lucky.

    Fair enough.

I was giving my opinion as a customer.

My rep knows that if I order anything from a clearance book and it's OOS, then I don't want an alternative.

I tend to order stuff when it's on offer rather than when I need it so I don't run out and have to buy from an alternative source.

TBH, the concept of a rep deciding to order something an alternative in case an item is OOS is a bit strange to me.
  • Grrrr - just had my C16 order delivered (I got three of the advent houses from backorder C15's books today by the way so it is still worth putting them on) and have 3 boxes missing!!!! Due to leave for sunnier climes at 5am tomorrow morning and not back till Friday so have emailed AVON to let them know not to try and deliver before then!!! If it was just my lovely delivery driver Ihad to worry about it wouldn't be an issue but last time some of my stuff went missing it took 2 WEEKS to get here - despite me notifying on the very first day!! What would you bet they try and dleiver on Wendesday?
