HP TouchPad

  • Monday night after missing the dixons.co.uk launch of the dropped price I went to the following stores at 7pm:

    - Comet - said they hadn't even heard of the device (i.e. they didn't stock it)

    - PC World - didn't have them in at that location but checked the stock system across the South Coast and said they'd all be reserved.

    - Tesco Extra - went to the Direct order & collect booth and explained to the Direct manager what was happening. He looked up Dixons website and saw the news feeds talking of the price drop and said he was at that moment unaware but we reached this agreement:

    1) I ordered two 16GB HP Touchpads at full price and paid up there and then. (at that moment there were 8 left on his stock system - I'm not sure if this is a regional or national stock system [7pm Monday 22nd])

    2) They would be delivered to store for 4pm Wednesday 24th obviously reserved for me as I had already paid.

    3) If the price dropped occurred by 4pm today with Tesco they would refund me on collection by having me "return" the Touchpads after collection and then re-buying them at the new price immediately.

    4) If no price drop by time of collection that I could hold onto them for 28 days which is the return period, provided I do not open the boxes. Then if there was a Tesco price drop I could do this "return and rebuy" method.

    5) If there wasn't a price drop by the end of 28 days after purchase I would just return them and get my money back, no problems.

I phoned Tesco Direct after sales line last night and the lady said in no uncertain terms that Tesco "have no intention to drop the price of the HP Touchpad to match competitors". On asking she said this was Tesco's current policy and it could change.

I'm not sure if it's reading too much into it, but dropping the price to match competitors is not the same as dropping the price because HP has issued a liquidation order. I've still got my hopes!

    Cheers

I'd love to know what Retail analysts are making of all of this!

I had never heard of a HP Touchpad and didnt really have an interest in buying one (thought the iPad was only serious contender in this market) until this firesale, and now I am desperate to get one. I have a smartphone, a netbook and a desktop. Do I actually really need one??? How on earth have I got up in this desperate need to have one, constantly refreshing this page for updates and stalking the call centres of high street shops. It will only end up in the bottom of a ruck sack and never used anyway!!!!!

I bought my daughter a rival 10" Android tablet last Xmas for £130 - it works fine and is quite gimmicky - Facebook/Angry Birds etc etc - it just lies there now gathering dust as we all use our laptops/netbooks same as before the tablet arrived. They really ain't no biggie. Although I was really excited about it at the time and can totally understand the furore going on here. Good luck everyone.

Has anyone had a telephone call from Comet after successfully placing an order on Monday?

After placing the order I got an order confirmation e-mail, but not an order completed one yet. However my order is still live on my account on their website, it hasn't been cancelled etc. My delivery date is supposed to be for Thursday.

For anyone else in the same boat-

They've updated my delivery date estimation to 5th September, and have sent me an e-mail confirming they've accepted my order and have included an electronic receipt. I understand that's what the phone call was about.

Rumour on the grapevine is a certain retailer has more than 2000 in stock and is doing some deal with HP to offload the rest of the UK stock sitting in HP warehouses with special bundle packages (maybe free case, maybe not) tonight around midnight.

Is there any update on where this rumour come from, or if HP are packaging all being sent into the channel with a bundle?

i have one on backorder at expansys...email response here-

    Dear customer,
    Thank you for your email.
Please note that the Touchpad has been put back as on preorder as we are currently out of stock.
We currently do not have any information regarding the price or release date.
If you already placed a pre-order please note that the price will then be updated on your order and you will receive an email asking you to confirm your pre-order before any shipment.
If too much is charged, you would then have a refund of the difference
As soon as HP comes back to us, we will of course inform you via email
