Valentine's Day - Do you bother?

Options
Can this be classed as a Winter Festivity?! It kind of is!

Ok so who "does" Valentine's  day, what do you do, what do you buy? Who doesn't do Valentine's day as you think its a commercialised con?

Last year we "did" valentine's day, because it was our first together, but I refused to go out, as the restaurants are overpriced and the food is thrown at you in a rush, so we cooked a nice meal for ourselves (something we dont do as we dont live together yet!) I did get spoiled, but I do still think its a total commercialised racket.

My better half asked my Mum "is £75 too much for 12 roses".....OMG!!!!!! For something that will be dead in a week - YES YES YES!! He got me a lovely bunch for £5 in Asda, and put the rest to the "house fund"

So this year I don't think we'll bother.....may send a card, but only because I make them...and I'll hold out for a few flowers cos I don't get them any other day of the year!!!

It depends these days about our financial situation nearer the time!

We have gone from nice restaurant on the day, to sandwiches at lunchtime in the park depending on the budget.

But we do always do something, no matter how small.

We have been married 26 years and still "do" Valentines Day. However, we never go out on the actual night as everywhere is too crowded and the "special menus" overpriced. Instead we spend a cosy evening together with a DVD and a bottle of wine. We will then go out the following evening.

My OH buys me flowers two weeks later when the prices have come back down to what they were before the 14th.

Last year I was working away with a female colleague, we ate out at a restaurant and we were treated the same as all the other diners, balloons candles etc.

DH & myself always exchange cards and we usually go out fo a meal around the date but not always on the 14th, I have told him not to bother with overpriced flowers on the day but in the past he has sent boquets to work.

I was actually supposed to be getting married on valentines weekend this year but due to unemployment we had to cancel everything:cry: (we are both employed again now!)
It depends on what we can afford.
When we first got together we bought each other gifts and stayed in but lately we haven't been buying gifts instead just making sure we spend time together (with a 1 and a 3year old and no-1 to babysit it's hard work!)
This year as OH does nite shift he will be at work, we may spend the weekend b4 or after together though (if we get a babysitter!)

    I've been Money Tipped!
27 years married and we definitely still do Valentines day (as do my parents after 54 years married!). We always send each other a card and usually a small present. Some years we have eaten out but the last few years we have usually cooked a nice meal with a nice bottle of wine.

Most restaurants are overpriced for Valentines and to be honest whenever we do eat out we usually end up saying "we could cook this as well/better" and are disappointed.

I do agree that it is a bit of a rip off but being a romantic I could not ignore it. It's not the only time of the year that we have romantic meals or buy each other small presents though

I was brought up with the thought that "you dont need just one day to be romantic, you should be like that all year around"....but im definatly holding out as its the only day I get flowers!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have been married 20 years by this Valentine's Day and i've never received a card or present. But then again i've never gave him one either. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I only see it as another excuse for Hallmark and the likes to make money. Dh bought me some perfume back in November. I much prefer spur of the moment things. Then you're not doing it out of obligation. :)
  • We do Valentines day at home, this year I have got my Hubby a red heart shaped box and am putting in it a mini frame with our very first picture together in it, a cute betty boop coaster with Betty in a red dress blowing kisses, some red heart shaped chocolates and a poem I am making into a scroll ( looking for poem on internet) I have red shredded paper and some cute lip shaped confetti to fill the box. I make cards so it is all taken care of,we will have a nice meal in , I will cook main course but will get a nice starter dessert ready made from M&S (refuse to pay rip-off prices eating out) and watch a romantic DVd and then have a glass or two of something fizzy and ????? maybe an early night LOL
