Please get your facts right guys - HP announced that they are not making any more DEVICES, NOT that they are dropping webOS (they said dropping devices lets them concentrate on developing it, but for what? Wait and see, or it's dead would be the two opinions I guess).
They also announced that they're considering selling their PC hardware division. Nothing else.
cgk1 - there ARE still developers working on webOS. As I said before, the apps are in the Catalogue, the numbers WILL NOT go down, apps can't just vanish!
While you're all running around looking for a bargain, I'll be trying to somehow turn my £400 Touchpad into a ~£100 one...

I couldn't care 2 bits about what they are/aren't developping anymore... what I *know* is that the fire sale prices for the Touchpad in the US are $99 for the 16GB and $149 for the 32GB, HP over there are also refunding the difference between the full and sale price to people who have bought one before the sale... so regardless of what they're saying, they've effectively ditched it. At that kind of price point, I'm definitely in the market for one especially as Android will be ported to it.

HP said they were dropping support for WebOS last week. Today the VP for webos has said they will continue to develop it, although the CEO said they would not.

The quote seems to be: "The WebOS is not dead. ... We're going to continue to evolve it, update and support it. We stand by it. The whole world isn't just about tablets and phones."

Most commentators I've read seem to think this means printers, cars, healthcare products etc, or extending the chipset support to make it licensable to other manfacturers - I don't see any mileage in the latter, and all of the other things don't suggest a developer market to me.

Just saw this on Engadget: "And there may be some good news for UK customers who have been watching the excitement from afar - reports are rolling in that the tablet will be available for £89 and £115 for the 16GB and 32GB versions. We'll let you know when we get official confirmation on the matter."

Grrrrrr sale price on at Currys and PC World website at 6pm as rumoured (£89/£115 depending on model) however "reserve & collect" only BUT NO STOCK of at least the 32GB in the London stores (tried a whole bunch of London postcodes...)

Edit: Best Buy now sold out... added to basket, went to checkout... by the time I'd finished entering my details they'd all gone already.

Meh, this is getting all a bit depressing:
Carphone Warehouse - added to basket, got to checkout, entered details... site down before payment processed. Now out of stock
Comet - added to basket, can't even *get* to checkout... probably too late now

Friday saw the HP CEO say they were walking away from WebOS with no mention of any further work.

Today sees the HP WebOS VP say they will be talking it forward.

As has been said if the flagship use of a phone and teblet are not going to drive it what will?

I think I'm not going to bother after all...same story over and over again with sites crashing when in the middle of checkout (Staples earlier today - £150 though instead of the £115 of the other places, called local store and their stock already gone). All turning into far too much hassle for something that I don't actually need.

Well done to anyone who's managed to get one and good luck to those still looking :)

Edit: well I *might* have one from Staples, I'm not sure... order acknowledgement just popped up on my screen, no email confirmation yet though.

People who have already ordered a Pre 3 have received this email:
    "Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting the Palm Store Customer Service.

Please be advised that HP are planning to announce a price reduction for Palm Pre 3 today or tomorrow. We are holding off all shipments to enable us to pass that price reduction on to you. The price reduction is very significant ( over 60% saving ) and the new price will be around £100.

We expect to get the clearance on the price today and will ship units tomorrow for delivery by the end of the week. Also the price difference
    will be refunded accordingly.

Should you have any further questions or concerns please let me know. I will be happy to assist you further.

The Palm Store Customer Service thanks you for the opportunity to assist you and hopes to have been of assistance.

    Kind Regards,

    Palm Store Customer Service Representative"

The actual announcement by the HP CEO was "The discontinuation of the hardware device operations of our WebOS division", which is different to walking away from WebOS entirely.

Don't trust anything from anyone in the WebOS business unit - not because they are misleading you but because they are being kept in the dark themselves - Stephen DeWitt might believe that at the moment but he found out that HP was ditching the hardware along with the rest of us when HP released a press statement - he's been completely cut out of the loop.

This is standard procedure - now they have decided that Business unit might be for the chop, those people will be feed vague statements but nothing useful in case they jump ship to the competition.

Similarly, I wouldn't trust a vague statement that they will look into their 'options' - if you buy a Touchpad, then it would be great if HP continue to develop it or someone else takes it on - but anyone buying the tablet should buy it on the reality of what we have today - a discontinued firesale product that is OK for £89. Anything else is a bonus.
