  • I would love to join...pretty please.

I am retired having worked as a nurse when my children were small, they are now 51, 49. 43 & 41. I had to menu plan and plan my weekends to do laundry, cleaning etc. I changed my first husband for a sugar daddy and we have been together for over 20 years. I had to work to enable us to keep body and soul together. At some point I contracted a virus which they eventually diagnosed as fibromyalgia. Because I did not look ill I was not taken seriously. At one point I was working in the Civil service, a job which almost led to a mental breakdown. Had I not got out when I did I am convinced that to would have eventually had a full scale breakdown.

I always used menu planning and still do, living on a pension in this day and age is not easy. three moves in two years has not helped but we get by. My husband has a condition which means he can, and does, pass out without warning, last year he was in hospital with c diff, contracted during an overnight stay in hospital following a syncopy attack. He was very lucky that our GP had doubts about his conidtion and had him admitted to a different hospital where he was diagnosed and treated. He is also fortunate that he got over it without having to have surgery. At one point it was touch and go.

I have varied interests which keep me busy along with keeping our apartment clean and tidy. I make myself stick to a cleaning routine, Monday, the berdooms (2) and bathroon get done. Friday its the turn of the sitting room and kitchen. Once the jobs are done, they are done for the week. Laundry gets done as and when, we do not have a space outside to dry clothes so I have a dryer which I use on econ 7, as I do the washer. I rarely use our big oven, I have a mini oven which does well for so I just have to do the veg to put a meal on the table. We are all electric, which means the dreaded storage heaters.......just 2 one in the sitting room and one in the kitchen. we have heaters in the bedrooms, I switch them on when we need them. Use hot water bottles in the bed, and we have fleeces and quilts to snuggle into when its very cold.

Recently we have been given the use of a walled garden under the landshare scheme started by HFW, we can grow what we like and just have to put the odd basket of veg into the house as payment. The exercise keep us both fit. I di from time to time get flare up of the fibro, had one just recently which wiped me out for almost a month, getting back to more like normal now although still very tired. Sleep is a sore subject in this house!!! OH sleeps, I don't.

I would have loved to be a stay at home mum when the chidlren were little, but with 4 of them my Ex's income was not enough and I really had no choice.......however the skills I learnt then have stood me in good stead over the years.
  • A good rule to have is: If you buy an item to bring into the house, you MUST get rid of two items already in the house.

I'm fairly happy with the amount of stuff I have. I spent money on furniture I like because I think it's important for storage and keeps the house looking uncluttered. It's much nicer to look at attractive furniture than the piles of clutter inside them :)

I don't like owning really expensive things because I would constantly worry about them getting damaged/broken/lost. I'd rather not have that kind of stress!

As for the internet, that's probably my downfall :/ My laptop is like a big black hole that hours of my day can get sucked into before I realise. I haven't had a TV for 5 years because I know I'd waste loads of time watching it. And it's nice to be able to tell people that when they're being judgemental about me being a 'housewife' with no kids :D
  • Wow LIT - That is quite some list!!!! So far today I have watched cbeebies with DD, worked on a crochet project I'm doing for someone and surfed the net. This evening we are supposed to be fruit picking in an Uncle's garden so I using that as my excuse lol. Lots of fruit prep and preserving going on in the next few days though.

    Wish I had the energy!
    Normal people worry me.
  • It doesnt "seem" much though and if I stayed off the laptop I could get so much more into my day.

Thanks for starting this post, am loving the chat.

I'm just turned 60 and for the past 5 years or so have been a carer for my seriously disabled husband. He's going into respite care next week and I plan to do loads.:rotfl:

Over the years I tried all sorts of combinations, full time work, part time work and being "just" a housewife. Of all my roles I loved being a homemaker the best. I never get bored but I have had some very boring paid jobs:o.

What I always hated was the pitying/sneering that other people - usually women I'm afraid - would give. Why is this I wonder.

Here I am my own boss - just the way I like it.:D

Anyway must dash - OH calling for me.

    Back later ......................

Sorry had to see to OH, the problem with being a carer is the constant interruptions. It can be very difficult sometimes trying to get things done, you start something and it has to be abandoned whilst caring duties overshadow everything else.

I think women were sold the idea of "having it all" - absolutely impossible I think. Something has to give and it is usually either our health or our relationship. Far too high a price to pay.

Julia - Don't jeopardise your health - it's just not worth it.

Take some time to get your life back on track, if you want to ease yourself back into less stressful work when you are better then well and good.

Just one point - be sure that whilst you are not working you protect your state pension entitlement. Make sure your contributions keep up to date.

I'm not 100% up on this because all the rules have recently changed - however you do not have to be claiming benefits - you just have to register that you are unwell and not working.

Right off to get something done whilst OH has his nap.
  • Can I join please?Left my job as a basic skills lecturer last year after a breakdown and an attempt to go back to work that failed.Am sort of enjoying being at home at the moment as there is no rush as there was when I was working. However as a single parent of three I feel under alot of pressure particularily financially to return to the workplace.Problem is I'm not sure I'm any good at teaching anymore as I was so beaten down at work, so may need a long think to decide what I want to do.
My eldest DD is leaving next month to go to university and am finding it hard to get my head round at the moment. Will still have 2 others at home though DD16 and DD14,so will still have plenty to do.
    Grrrrr I hate depression!!!!
