Hi
Sorry feel like a bit of a gatecrasher here but need some advice please and feel you lovely ladies will be able to help
Quick decision has been made to TTC number 4 baby
Due to being a bit older now (me 36 and hubby 46) wanted to be a bit more prepared in case it takes a while. (Happened first month with all of the other 3, but am aware it may not be that easy now we are a little older, less time to try etc...)
So in my preparation I bought some Ovulation testing sticks. I had my last period 14-19th July and decided to try one yesterday. It gave 2 positive lines (one was quite faint) - which means I am ovulating?? Am I right? And this is the time I am most likely to get pregnant?
This is where I am confused, from researching (I am completely clueless about any of this) it appears I should not be ovulating this early in my cycle? I have very heavy periods and think my cycle is on the shorter side. ( I never track my period, I have dreadful PMT so am fully aware of what is coming...)
I know all womens cycles are different, but just feel I am either getting the wrong idea/misunderstanding the stick or have a very jumbled up/short cycle!!
Any advice please -could I be ovulating this early or am I going wrong somewhere? Or am i talking rubbish??0 -

Hi - a positive result on an ovulation stick is when the test line is as dark as, or darker than, the control line. So you can have two lines (a faint test line and a dark control line), but it's not a positive - the hormone which the test checks for (LH) is always present in your system, but you get a surge before ovulation which the test is checking for.
When you get a positive (test line darker than, or as dark as, the control) you are likely to ovulate in the next 12-36 hours so it's a good idea to get busy then!
How long are your cycles usually? Most people ovulate about 14 days before their period starts, so if you have a 28 day cycle, you will ovulate on about day 14 (it could be between day 12-16).
The general advice is to have sex every 2-3 days throughout your cycle, that way you have a good chance of catching the egg!
Hope that helps0 -
Thanks so much for the quick reply!
That makes so much more sense now. Yes the line was fainter than the control line - so I am to keep a check on when it appears the same or as dark as the control line?
My cycle is usually shorter than 28 days - on average its about 24-25 days - not great when they are heavy and I suffer from PMTbut they have always been like that.
So if my cycle is shorter, I guess I would ovulate a little sooner than the average 12-16 days - or just on the earlier end of 12 days?

Yes - keep testing until you get a dark test line. With ovulation tests, you need to have concentrated urine, so it's a good idea to not drink for a couple of hours before you do the test, best results are obtained during the day time, not with first morning urine (which is best for pregnancy tests).
Good luck - hopefully you will have another quick conception as with your other children!0 -

My smear today was easy peasy but I've had so many people having a look-see down there recently she could have done it with a broom and I don't think I'd have bothered! She did give me a big smile when I said no contraception too0 -
