Depression

Sorry, but I really can't not reply to this post. Are you thus implying that all of us can't be bothered to do anything about our mental illness? If this was a miracle cure all, don't you think all our doctors would be suggesting it?
'You know that it works' you need to add 'for me' at the end of that sentence. Mental illness is different in each person that suffers and as such no one method is going to cure everyone's depression. I went through 4 different types of medication, all of which will have worked for some people, until I found the one that worked for me. The same thing does not work in all cases.
I am pleased, particularly if you have been suffering with mental illness, that you have found something that works for you. And yes, it is worth 'suggesting' it to others as a method to consider, but I think your attitude that if we don't do it we are not prepared to go to 'any lengths' to help ourselves is disgusting.
Also please don't suggest to people that meds don't work, you are then encouraging people who are easily influenced to stop taking their medication, which is very dangerous. Doctor's put us on our medication for a reason.
This thread is a place for us to Support each other through this horrible illness and your attitude is hardly 'supportive'.
Sorry, rant over, but I really couldn't let this pass.
Absolutely!!!
I couldn't agree more hun!

Hello all, I've just discovered this site and I am feeling so glad to have found this thread!! I have just posted my situation on another forum which I regulary post on so I'll just copy and paste:
Hi, my world is kinda falling apart and I seriously need some help/advice.
Recently I've been feeling very depressed about a number of things. Following outstanding GCSE results I went on to do my AS and A2 exams and all was well. However, on results day last year (Final A2 results) I got a major blow because I totally messed up one of my subjects where I was expecting to do extremely well. It meant that I lost my uni place (which I had worked extremely hard for to get it in the 1st place) and I felt miserable. After many months, the feeling low etc still hasnt't diappeared and I'm starting to act differently...I can see that myself. My parents are getting extremely worried about me and called my GP to my house today. I had no idead about this intended visit so I was just !!!!ed off with them. I refused to speak to them cos they think I have got MENTAL HEALTH problems
I'll be the first to admit that I am actually feeling low and depressed...but for my parents to think there is something mentally wrong with me is just scaring me! My GP attempted to talk to me but I locked myself in my room. Then I went to the stairs and over heard them speaking about me (GP and my parents that is). He was brainwashing them about how I'm going to get violent and how I'm going to get sucked into depression. Btw, this is a new GP and I have NEVER met him before - we moved house recently. So this GP was talking to my parents for at least a good 30mins...the stuff he was coming out with just made my blood boil...as if I was some psycho who was about to go out on the streets and kill random people
Now this is where I am just stuck. As my GP he is legally allowed to do stuff without my consent apparently. I am not 100% sure about what he said but I heard something like "we'll do this against his will...I'll get in touch with the social services and refer him to something?" I am just scared of just how much he can do without my consent! He must have mentioned the mental act health at least a dozen times and now I am just freaked out that they're gonna put me in a mental home or something
Can I just say that appearance wise I am no psycho...very well spoken, sociable and outgoing person....it's just recently I've been very "off" with my family.
This is where I ask for help I guess. I'm not sure what I'm after really Perhaps someone with legal knowledge here could advise me as to what right I have against being forced to be mentally treated?? My GP (whom I have never met as I mentioned) is going use the mental health act to treat me in a hospital I think...against my will....cos I certainly don't think I'm going mental.
Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated. Thanks. :money:
(I had a lot of emotions on my post but none of them got copied)
Btw, please go easy on me...I'm only 180 -
Hi Matt and welcome to the site
I think you have been very brave posting here and you obviously are aware that your behaviour has changed.
Just so you know, depression is a mental illness - BUT its not the end of the world and many many people suffer from horrible depression and get better.
Ok hun... I think the first thing to do is to talk to your family, as calmly as you can. I'm sure they are only doing what they think is best for you, and without all the facts your imagination will work overtime to distort the little you heard
I think it is unlikely that you would be sectioned (detained under the mental health act) without first trying other solutions, unless you are a danger to yourself or to others. A doctor can't do this on their own.
BUT you do need help - You say yourself that you are not getting better and your GP can refer you to the mental health trust you are qualified to help you.
I know its scary, hunny, but with help it will get better, I promise.
Keep posting as there are lots and lolts of lovely people here who will support you through this.
Much love

How is everyone today?
CCStar, It sounds like you could have been suffering from depression as a child. Have you ever seen anyone to talk through things that happened during your childhood?
What is your Mother saying about your son?
Sazbo :hello: Sazbo. How are you? I hope you've had a lovely weekend.< Sazbo. So that was you who I saw running yesterday :rotfl: You must be really fit to be running that far.
What charity are you running for hun?
Ethel, How are you hun? Did you straighten your hair?
flis21, Glad to hear that the diet is going well :T are you feeling better in yourself for starting the diet?
ooohon 1000 posts :T :T :T well done you!
Matt!
Big (((HUG))) for being able to post openly about how you are feeling.
Obviously your parents were so concerned about you that they decided to call the GP. However, I would have thought it would have been better if they had spoken to you about how you were feeling and then perhaps encouraged you to seek help from your GP if you felt it was necessary. I can totally understand to you feeling !!!!ed off with them. I would be exactly the same.
I can understand that you are scared because you overheard a few unpleasant things. Do you think it would perhaps be a good idea if you were to go and see your GP yourself to find out what he meant and also to explain to him how you are feeling not how he thinks you are feeling.
At 18 you are an adult and therefore legally your parents don't have to be informed of anything.
A Doctor on his own can't section you. It's a pretty difficult thing to get a person sectioned.
Most people who find themselves in a mental hospital/on a psychiatric ward are usually voluntary/informal patients. They only ever consider this if they think you are a danger to yourself or others e.t.c
Do you yourself think you need help from your GP?
Do you have any previous history of depression or done anything that might have alarmed your parents/GP?
Love to you all

I think it would be good for you to go and see this GP that came out to your house. Talk to him about how you are feeling and about what you overheard.
Are you feeling under a lot of pressure to do well academically?-->♥<-- Sugar Coated Owl -->♥<--

Hi all ! sorry im just popping in but I just wanted to say hi this now as I want to reply to you all, when i have more time. But I just want to say I hope you are all doing well and will post back tomorrow. Take care :T
tkane welcome to the thread. Dont worry your gp cant just section people easily.I am sure this is not what your parebnts want either.Speak to your parents and remain calm tell them how you feel. You are an adult and I personally wouldnt have a doctor who was so extreme. I have been in far worse situations and my doctor would never talk this way .So if you dont want this doctor change him and find a doctor who you can relate to ,or as razorblade says maybe speak to them. Its good you want some help and maybe you just need counselling this now.If you are at college/ school ( excuse my ignorance ) do you not have a studEnt counsellor there who you can talk to and this might also help your parents understand that you are rational and dealing with the situation maturally.good luck .0 -
Hiya Matt
They can't section you unless you're a danger to yourself or others.. and they need two doctors and a social worker to do it..
My daughter was sectioned under the mental health act 4 weeks ago for 28 days assessement in a psychiatric ward.. her circs are very differnt tho, she was already in hospital and WAS dangerous to herself.
Tomorrow 2 doctors from separate hospitals are going to assess her along with a social worker to see if she can be unsectioned or put on another section which would last for 6 months.
You can appeal against it if you are sectioned.. they will give you a letter telling you how to do it but I don't see what reason they would have to section you at all.
If you are feeling pressured at all or suffering from stress.. then do go and see your gp.. if you not keen on the one who came round you can ask to see a different one.. they can prescribe you something to get you thru a difficult time or refer you for counselling or something similar
