I had a treadmill when I lived in a flat and I would never use it if my neighbour was in. She used to work shifts so I would run the treadmill around her shifts.

She did not ask me to or complain it is just common sense to consider how it would sound below in flats. By the same token the man upstairs from me took his hobnail boots of at the door on his way in from work.

As to their leaving food in bags at the front a few photographs should make it possible to sort out with the landlords involved.
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.

Using a treadmill in an upstairs flat? seriously?

That's what I thought - it must sounds like a herd of elephants coming through the ceiling in the flat below. Perhaps the OP needs to trade in the treadmill for a static exercise bike?

  • Keep using the treadmill. If the soundproofing is not up to standard it's not your problem. Then vote with your feet and move out at the earliest opportunity. If fag smoke wafts up through the floorboards I doubt that the insulation and fire protection are anywhere near adequate.

I find the smoking issue a bit wierd though. If you weren't against it then why write them a note? And even if you were against it, you can't go around telling people not to smoke in their own house.

In the previous (purpose built) flat I lived I think the guy above me had a treadmill. Well I think he did. The noise was so faint it was hardly noticeable but it was the sort of repetitive sound I'd assume a treadmill would make. Anyway, in that flat, it was no problem for me.

Do you have trendy floorboards/laminate floor with no carpet? I suspect so if you can smell downstairs smoke.

These make life really noisy for the people underneath in flats and they have been banned from quite a few apartment blocks as they cause so much trouble. Even if you are putting a mat under the treadmill the noise is probably awful.

Ask your landlord for carpets and you'll probably solve two problems in once - their smoke and your noise.

  • I was renting a flat until a few months ago and we suffered 'cooking smells pollution'. The floors were carpeted and it was a purpose built flat. It was so strong that sometimes that coming home, i'd open the front door from the communal area (which didn't smell) and call out 'hmmm dinner sounds good' but there was no one cooking in our flat... The cooking smells were of Asian spices and that can be a bit much for the stomach first thing in the morning.

So basically, I sympathise. No one really wants the sounds or smells from other people invading their space. That includes tread mills. They generally don't sound like neighbours i'd like to have, they sound inconsiderate. I know it's not fair and you were there first and have done nothing wrong, treadmill aside, but you may need to move to resolve the situation.

So at what time were you using the treadmill again?

Just move!!! Get out of there. Flexibility is a great benefit of renting, - find somewhere else!

Taking written notes of all the problems, complaining, bad atmosphere, - f**k all that, - just move.

Might be better to just take a run round the block.
