Would have thought o.p. using treadmill at 6pm isn't being anti-social or unreasonable. Could understand neighbours complaining if it was 6am but think they're just being nasty. Shame she's being the one forced from her home because of these newcomers but think that might be the best course of action. They sound mose unpleasant.

Aw! I love the doggy on your profile!! Is he yours?!

Good point, this is entirely where my issue is.

What am I allowed to do in the flat? that is exactly the point i was trying to get at...Ultimately, can he say you cannot do any of the above mentioned activities not if any of them are 'nice'. We plan to leave at the break point anyway, not that this means I'm going to be a pain because i know I'm leaving. I just think its better to know my rights and not bend over backwards like a lot of people in this country.

The noise you are making isn't considered "normal" household noise.

Which is why the landlord has turned around and told you to stop it.

Ultimately the tenants downstairs can complain to the environmental health department of your local council. Once they write to your landlord, your landlord may decide you are too much trouble and give you notice as soon as feasibly possible.

On the other hand -if you lived in a fully carpeted flat and the tenants were complaining about you walking during the day or hoovering during the day it would indicate structural problems with the property. As this is considered "normal" household noise if they complained enough times and escalated it, your landlord could contact theirs and they could be the ones asked to leave.

Babies crying and children playing is considered normal household activity in most circumstances.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • I just want to say I can see where you are coming from, your downstairs neighbours leave these bin bags that bring vermin yet nothing is done, yet you use your treadmill once and you are banned from using it, its understandable you are unhappy - I can see its not about being allowed to use the treadmill ( well I don't think so from what you have put) but how you complain about them - those bags could cause a health hazard and nothing is done, but they complain about you and you get a letter. 'The straw that broke the camels back' It seems to me its their landlord that is lax to the point of only being interested in the rent. They should have had letters from their LL about the bags and the mess they make in communal hallways. I wish I had an answer but sadly I don't. I just hope you can find somewhere new, downstairs or maybe to ensure no noisy neighbours I know can be as reasonable these days to rent a small house, might be the way to go as if the neighbours complain about your treadmill its easy, just costly to soundproof you walls. Good luck
