I've just completed the whole process now I think i'm waiting to hear back, I've given my national insurance number which i'm slightly worried about, does this mean that I will pay NI? Should I declare my earnings and if so how do I go about this? Does anyone know if ChaCha give any advice on tax etc? Also what would happen if I only did this for say 3 months as I found that the income was not worth it, should I still declare my earnings? I'm a little confused any help would be appreciated x0

You do need to register as self-employed. HMRC will automatically send you NI bills for class 2 self employed contributions. As you are unlikely to earn more than £5313 per year from this, you need to fill in the form for class 2 exemptions and state you are employed too so paying class 1. This covers you and you will get a certificate of exemption up til about 2014/5. Therefore no NI will be payable over and above your employed NI, which is automatic anyway.
You are unlikely to need to pay much, if any tax. Once you take into account your expenses on your self assessment - e.g. pc ruuning costs, internet costs etc, you will 'probably' make a loss, which means no tax will be due.0 -

To register as self emplyed you can do it online @ the HMRC website. They will send you some basic info after this.
Unfortunately they won't send you the NI exemption form off their own backs, for obvious resaons :-) - you have to send it to them. It's form CF10, so google it, download it, fill it out and send it off to them.
Don't be alarmed that the certificate takes about two months to ocme through. If you get any NI bills, just ignore them as the certificate, when it eventually gets to you, will cover it.0 -
