Not sure if it's just me... I've been buying reduced punnets of fruit, but the plums never seem to ripen. They stay hard and then go straight to hard and wrinkly, without a ripe stage in between! Really not keen to waste them.

I've rescued a load with a lovely plum crumble, but it's a shame not to be able to snack on them.

Any ideas on how to store them better so they ripen? They live in the fruit bowl at the moment. Cheers!

I tend to keep them in a dark place at room temperatue and covered. That usually does the trick :j

all-change - a few hours in the airing cupboard might help your plums ripen, but don't forget them or you'll end up with prunes ! some varieties do tend to stay rather hard in which case I find cutting them in two and microwaving for a few minutes turns them into a nice plum compote.

Trying to be economical I buy meat if I see it in the reduced to clear section of the supermarket and freeze it, defrosting as needed. I bought two packs of sausages and took one to a BBQ and defrosted the other one yesterday. When I cooked them they were horrible, thick slimy skins and all the leftover ones I threw as I couldn't face eating them again. Also had to bin some very old and weathered beetroot that had been slowly aging unnoticed at the back of the veg trolley.

    Oh well, must try harder

Argh i was doing so well and I've just found a full punet of Strawberries at the back of the fridge. I'm going to have to trim them what can I do with them there definately past there best.

Answered my own question and trimmed them down and made them into Muffins. There was a fair bit of waste but I'll put that into the compost bin. Just tasted one and they are delish.

Chucked a cherry tom (had way too much fluff growing on it! and the remains of the chorizo I talked about before). Updated total to account for this. Still happy am trying to reduce waste and this thread keeps me motivated :)

To ripen almost any fruit, pop into a paper bag with a banana. Haven't a clue why, but it works! By the same token, bananas are best left out of the fruit bowl!
