Hello guys, you sound like a friendly bunch, i would like to join in with your challenge if i may! I rarely leave the comfort of the dfw board but have just gone part time at work due to ambitious plans and want to start cutting one of my big expenditures - food! I am terrible for throwing food away that i have left to go off so would love to put it to better use. I will be watching these pages to learn of some good recepie ideas.
I have read the first few pages and have found some good links so thanks for that and hopefully i can see how many days within a month i go without throwing food away.:j Live on £4500, £2531/£4500:T 101 in 1001 (52/101):j:beer::j

I make a lemon polenta cake, I have three knackered looking lemons and no intention of making cake for a while, can I freeze the whole lemons?Or shall I cut them up and squeeze each slice seperately for the lemon juice for my cake? Also I need to use the pith for a bit of taste, should I grate the outside of the lemons before I freeze them??:p Thanks for your help, I don't want to throw them away, theyr'e huge!

I posted this question on the June grocery challenge but no-one has answered so I thought I would try my luck here! I found an unopened packet of smoked mackerel in the fridge marked "display until 28th May" and "use by 28th May". It cost £1-58 so I really don't want to throw it out - is it safe to use or should I just bite the bullet and throw it?
thanks for any advice
Moniker
So long as it's still in its shrink wrapped packing you'd almost certainly be fine eating it, BUT, something I would say is that if you're going to feel uncomfortable eating it then just bite the bullet and throw it. Otherwise you'll eat it, and convince yourself it wasn't right, and spend several hours waiting to be sick in spite of having only psychological reasons for doing so!! Hi all
I am still here - I am definetly spending less time shopping because we are using up every scrap of food we have inThe only times I have been shopping were for the BOGOF's at Morrisons with the £5 voucher then some whoopsies at Mr T's.
At Mr T's we got about 15 punnets of Raspberries down to 15p a punnet, 3 swedes at 3p each and various other bits - the most expensive being 2 bunches of £4.99 flowers for 25p eachMy mum got a load of stuff to because we share bargins - lol.
Anyway loads in the freezer and the swede peelings being saved for veg stock and will so a stew or soup to go in the freezer.
Need to go through the cupboards and fridge today to see what needs using.
Welcome to allthe newbies !!!! You will soon see this challenge pay off !!

I have porridge every morning and because hubby had used the last of it for his flapjacks I decided to use a small box of 'McCann's Steel cut Irish Oatmeal' I had in the cupboard. YUK!!! I simply can't eat it as porridge but am reluctant to throw it. Any suggestions? Not sure it would make good flapjacks so other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks0 -
Annie, try posting on the GC thread, I bet Mrs M has a recipe :rotfl:
Every recipe that I have tried by Mrs M has been a resounding success, my OH loves her tortillas.

Congrats on the sale, will miss you from the Amazon thread (good price I thought, BTW), but keep bumping into each other elsewhere anyway

Been lurking on this thread for a while, but have registered now. I had a rummage and found a packet of dried dates and some suet left over from Christmas cakes/puddings, so today we have date pudding and date slices on the go (both v.yummy).
I think I'm quite a thrifty cook anyway, and don't throw much away, but I am being stumped by some dessicated coconut and some mixed peel (also from Christmas) and a couple of tins of chickpeas. Any good ideas for these? Not necessarily in the same recipe, but brownie points if you can!0 -

You can throw a handful of oatmeal into a stew or casserole to thicken it Annie. Works a treat! Also if you have a breadmaker look out for recipes using oatmeal.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
