Remember that shopping on a daily basis is fine but only if you're not using the car more every day - especially at today's prices!!
You are quite right! I am lucky enough to have a supermarket 10 minutes' walk from work. My husband sometimes stops off at the shop in his car on the way back from work - this works as the shop is on his route.
If you have to make a detour I agree the cost could mount up.
All the more reason to shop locally if you can :)

I so need to join in this challenge, one of my main problems is I still think I am shopping for a family and most of the time it is only me and DS 18 at home. Most of the time he doesn't eat what I cook anyway as he is never here at meal times. Once again I have cleared out my fridge and had to throw moulding veg on the compost heap. I did manage to salvage some of it, and made a veg sauce using courgettes/peppers and a tin of tomatoes - did have to throw peppers/courgettes and half an aubergine away - approx £1.50 wasted. Also salvaged enough carrots/cabbage/cauli for a meal for three with enough leftover for my lunch today - thrown away butternut squash, some of the cabbage and carrots. Estimate another £1wasted - £2.50 altogether - I think if I try to look at it like that it might make me think in future.

Just remembered the seven eggs as well = a month past their useby date - another £1

I wouldn't have chucked those - only a month out of date? I've been known to eat them six months later. Have just bought 2 dozen at Mr T's for £2 per dozen, and I doubt I'll get through half a box before the use by dates; I'm sure they'll be fine though.

Gosh I daren't even feed them to the dog, which is what I usually do with out of date eggs/yoghurts etc. I don't like eggs very much and usually only use them for yorkshire puddings. I did use another two up yesterday that were just on their sell-by date in a cake. The flour and marg were also just out of date so did feel quite virtuous.

I never knew lettuce soup existed! Thanks for the link:D

I was thinking of making some salsa, toms, onions, chilli and whatever else i can find so hopefully can use the lettuce up on that and with what's left I might try the soup!

I've been good today - lunch was the leftover cooked broccolli with a cheese sauce. I added some pasta and sweetcorn to. There was enough for me and DD's lunch and a DD size portion for the freezer! Can't belive I made such a yummy meal from something that would have normally been chucked! By doing this I am definatley being more healthy, I have loads of homemade meals in the freezer so even when I'm at work I know DH and DD will still be eating well :T

I can confirm the soup I made is delicious. Thick, healthy and so cheap!:j
Just heard on news that the cost of shopping is soaring, again:mad: . Me thinks this thread will be very popular soon.
I am doing this along with monthly food budget challenge and challenge to reduce my monthly mileage therefore cutting fuel costs.
Hopefully the crunch won't hurt too much.
Last night I picked up x4 chicken legs (organic) for £1.98 instead of £5.98 in Morrisons reduced section. I am going to trawl reduced sections of supermarkets I can get to without using petrol. Hopefully this will help too. Other news today says that Organic food sales is reducing because of cost so might be some bargains to be had.

Hi, Can anyone tell me how to make salsa? I have always been a very lazy shopper and bought everything ready done. I am trying to get into making things from scratch etc, so I will probably be asking some really daft questions. Also has anyone got a recipe for cream of tomato soup?

    Thanks in advance.

I posted this question on the June grocery challenge but no-one has answered so I thought I would try my luck here! I found an unopened packet of smoked mackerel in the fridge marked "display until 28th May" and "use by 28th May". It cost £1-58 so I really don't want to throw it out - is it safe to use or should I just bite the bullet and throw it?

    thanks for any advice
