Thanks Zip - I've 'magic'd' the leftover nut roast into a kind of shepherds pie tonight by adding some meat free 'mince', onion, peas and some leftover tinned toms (chopped) and then leftover mash and some Bisto for a bit more 'gravy juice' (ok for veggies). Was rather hit or miss but thankfully it seems to have turned out ok - onl comment from OH was 'I prefer baked beans in my shepherds pie to peas'....I nearly lamped him :rotfl::rotfl:
Off to freeze the remains of the turkey - was advised this was ok to do, and after the vat of turkey casserole I made yesterday I really can't face any more turkey recipies atm :rotfl:Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

[past week have made carrot cake with oranges,
Can i ask how you make this please . ? love carrot cake but have never made it , and love the sound of oranges for it ,
ive really got to save money this year ( dont we all ) but need lots of money this year to help out different family members , i always try not to waste food , and always looking for new ideas , this thread is perfect for me , and i hope to be able to contribute a few of my ideas , MANY thanks to everyone , ive spent an enjoyable evening going through this thread , theres so much info , you are all amazing and so inspirational . i went shopping at the right time yesterday . when they were putting out reduced stuff, and got huge bags of potatoes for 18p . turnips 10p . large bag of carrots 30p and parsnips also 30p for a large bag , needless to say i bought all i could carry , for once things seem to be falling into place , as the day before id defrosted one of my freezers ( Ive got 2 ) and did an inventory , i put in a book whats in there , and also write T. M . B . top. middle . bottom . referring to which shelf its on , so i can go straight to it , like you we have some odd concoctions , but my lot luckily will eat most things , ive been chopping veg up all day to freeze , but it will be so usefull .
today i made a pan of turkey stew , with the leftover turkey , and the veg , just have enough turkey for a stir fry tomorrow , and thats all used, i also made cream of leek , turnip and apple soup . actiually its a weight watchers recipe , but i had all the ingredients , and needed to use the apples as they hadnt been eaten , ( I just use eating apples in it ) , and also yesterday i got in my reduced haul / lots of large size muffins , ( Cakes ) in packs of 4 for 20p . so they are in the freezer too , and will use them as a pudding with custard , squirty cream , or ice cream on , reading this thread has reminded me i could make quiche and flans with my leftovers , used to do them all the time , but had forgotten , will definitely look in on this thread every day , and see what everyone is doing ,,,,,,,and thanks again x x0 -
Lurking fridge pie; you simply heat up left over cooked meat and /or veg in a bit of gravy, which might be left over or made fresh. If you are a veggie, or just want a change, you could use cheese sauce. Fry up any uncooked veg that is looking a bit sorry for itself, and any left over bacon rashers (if you have the odd one that is going a bit dry), and add. Put in a few chopped up herbs if you have them, and season nicely. Use your common sense obviously, think about what will be OK together, and don't use anything that is really old and furry, but most savoury things are OK.
Top with mashed potato and bake in the oven till nice and brown on top, making sure that all is piping hot. You could sprinkle some cheese that has gone a bit dry on top of the mash before baking if you have some (grate it first obviously). Alternatively you could top with pastry - it looks quite posh if you make little cut out pastry leaves to decorate it with. Kids really like to do this last bit by the way, and they are much more likely to eat something if they have helped to make it.
Back in the 1970s we called this odds and sods pie as I would try to make an open quiche type pie that could be eaten hot or cold as the country was on a three day week and often we had to go without electricity as the power had been cut for up to 6 hours a day.I had a friend (who I still have luckily) who lived 5 houses down the road from me who had a gas oven (mine was electric)I often used to get her to warm food up when the lights went out.0 -
I've taken some leftover turkey out of the freezer and going to use up all the veg left in the fridge plus some rtc spuds (10p for big bag of whites!) to make a Turkey Stew with dumplings for tomorrow's tea. Then i'll use the rest of the spuds to make potato soup.
Tonight we're having a mini buffet to use up the rest of the cheeses, cooked meats, party nibbles etc

Same here! We froze it all on Christmas Day and will be taking it out this evening.
I've always had a quick look through this thread but with a baby due 4 weeks today I think I'll be looking with more interest! I'm especially intrigued about the idea of popping ends of carrots, asparagus, potato peelings etc into a freezer bag and then cooking it all and blitzing into a soup when the bag is full! Is there any reason not to do this?My debt free diary | Post Office loan: £2131 1429.38 | Barclaycard: £4429 1988.12 | Paypal Credit £322.71 574.91 | Monzo Flex £169.03 |

Moll, yes you can freeze ham. What a fantastic thing to be given.
I freeze ham in portion sizes for meals in little tubs. I then use the ham in things like omlettes, quiches, on the top of HM pizza's etc. Yesterday I made a HM pasty with HM savoury rice - in the pasty using up some sliced leek, a carrot, an onion and 2 slices of bacon (chopped) and some cheese. The pasty was delicious and it would also have worked with some ham rather than the bacon.
For a dinner, cold sliced ham would be lovely with some HM wedges or chips and an assortment of pickles.
I'm sure people will be along with lots of other ideas shortly.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
The other thing you can do with ham is to chop some up and put it in some home-made lentil soup which bulks it up enough to turn it into a meal in a bowl.
Chopping some up and serving with a cheese sauce with pasta is another option.
Heating up a slice and serving on toast with a poached egg on top makes a nice breakfast.
Mixing up with some grated cheese in a jacket potato is another option for a quick hot snack.0 -
wow you are brilliant , thankyou so much for the ham ideas, my brain had gone blank . will definitely do some of these0
