not totally sure should admit this one, for health and out-of-date reasons, but never mind...

last night when rummaging for something extra after dinner was a bit sparse, i found the end of xmas 08 panetone in pantry, and remembered xmas 07 brandy butter was lurking deep in the fridge (alchohol meant it wasn't off!!)... so i fried the sliced panetone in the brandy butter till it went all caramelised and yummy. excellent. :D i will definately do this this year before the panetone gets lost in the pantry!

I love the idea of not wasting food and was brought up that it was quite sinful to do this. I am quite good generally speaking and really ven those odd times I dont use something up I have 2 hounds that are always willing and eager:D Ive decided tho as we have been eating a lot of broccoli that I would attempt to use the stalks in a soup rather then cooking them up with other stuff for the dogs. Last night I used half of the pears my OH had brought reduced in a crumble and will use the other half today either in a juice combo or another crumble. We had corned siverside last night (whoopsied;)) abd I intend to make sandwiches for my OH and make up a sort of corned hash fry up with leftover meat and vegies with an egg thrown in yum yum.

I am religious about composting and recycling, so dont really throw out that much stuff to landfill, but would like to reduce the little I do. One problem I have if that often it is packaged fruit/vegies that have the heavy markdown so I am torn between my desire to reduce my debt and my desire to reduce my environmental impact. Luckily being frugal is generally in keeping with the green ethos, except organic food which costs more but I grow a heap of our vegies so thats all good.

Anyway I love the idea of this challenge and find it very interesting to see how pple use things up.:T

  • Hi everyone, I just made this (minus the mushrooms)-

    http://www.waitrose.com/recipe/Slow_Roasted_Topside_Beef_with_Porcini_Mushrooms.aspx

    which was delic!!

have leftover mash and 'gravy' (red wine, onion etc) was thinking of cooking some pork steaks tomorrow to go with the mash and gravy. Do you think the gravy will be ok tomorrow and any other ideas as to what to put with it??

am I right that dark meat is best with red wine?

    Thanks everyone :D

The gravy would be fine until tomorrow ! do you have any sausages? Mash, sausages, gravy ... mmmmmmmmmm . True comfort food! Pork steaks would go too!

not a big wine connaseur (totally spelt wrong), but I think red does go with red meat etc.

hopefully someone smarter will be along soon he he

You could also use the gravy with some sort of meat in a pie......
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Dark meat does go with red wine, but so does lighter meat like chicken - coq au vin, for example. (Personally I find red wine goes best with more red wine, but that's just me being a p!ss artist, I think. :o)

I'd imagine pork steaks would be really nice with the red wine gravy - you could try heating the pork in the gravy so that it takes on more of the flavour rather rather just pouring it over the cooked steaks. It would be nice with some green veg, I'd think - steamed cabbage or green beans or something, depending on what you've got.
Back after a very long break!

  • I have to ask a question and if I am being totally silly then I apologise in advance. My dad just gave me his old spaghetti jar that he never used. I got it out the back of the cupboard and it had a pack of (still sealed in packet) spaghetti dated 2004! Would anyone eat this? It looks fine, but I don't know if that is taking it too far lol.

    Thanks
