To all my fellow compulsive bargain hunters with full freezers. I think we need a "whoopsie" money box. Every time we spot a foodie bargain when our freezers & store cupboards are full, we should refrain from buying, but put the cost of the reduced goods in the money box. That way we still get the benefit of the bargain in kind but don't have to feel guilty about not having anywhere to store it!

Primrose, that is quite radical!!!!!!!!!!! But I am literally out of space and will have to start eating what's in the freezer and not replacing it for a while. I must be strong and resist the lure of the whoopsies...

leftovers that haven't been dished up ( joke at the moment- boys on growing spurts) get frozen as individual portions and the either Dh takes them for his lunch or we have a leftovers night served buffet style where everyone gets bits of this and that but all gets used up, I may have to add a salad and some bread depending on what there is but it is basically a free dinner.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman
  • Any ideas for a gazillion mushrooms and a bag of spinach that is about a week or so out of date?

  • I have found an answer to not being able to walk past the whoopsies for me and thought I would share in case it helps someone else.

My situation is enforced as I am emigrating and knew I had to eat up my freezers as binning food would make me cry.

I started by doing a freezer inventory then meal planning like a demon. I only shopped once a week and only bought whoopsies if they were over 50% reduced on that one shop. You might need a 75% rule if it's really bad.

I think the trick to it for me has been to get my reward and feel good factor from using things up and finding creative combinations rather than from squirrelling stuff away.

I am now really excited, with 3 weeks to go, my freezer list is now 1 1/2 columns long down from 7 columns of A4. The end is in sight and the ultimate aim is to bin nothing and have empty cupboards on the last day.

Wish me luck 14th August is E Day :D
